The war on science in the US is already having an effect on private sector research like AlphaFold. Bears repeating but the private sector builds on top of things created by academic research for the public good. This hurts everyone.

HMMER is the bedrock of genomic annotation globally, and now its funding is terminated for no reason. @cryptogenomicon.bsky.social is now on bsky:

HMMER is crucial to our modern understanding of protein biochemistry and has almost certainly generated at least a 10-fold return on investment for every dollar the US government has spent on funding it.

NIH funding supporting the HMMER and Infernal software projects has been terminated. NIH states that our work, as well as all other federally funded research at Harvard, is of no benefit to the US.

In my day people read the abstract when they wanted to pretend to be smart.

Chicago style pizza in the Vatican is now cannon.

Colossal bio guys have gone too far.

This is what happens when you try to make penguins fly. They're flightless for a reason.

This is such a crackpot idea but has anyone run for Congress on the explicit promise that they will insider trade and use the profits to set up a wealth fund for their district?

If you have a free tech or biotech event in the Bay Area that doesn't feature pizza, beer, and AI I will advertise tf out of it

I remember the first meetup I ever went to in the Bay Area had steak, mezcal, a DJ, and a dude who figured out how to run windows 98 in the browser via web assembly showing off for 150 nerds. We used to be a community, a proper community.

For almost a decade broke recent college grads in hubs like Boston and SF could eat for free and network almost every night as long as they didn't hit their pizza toxicity threshold.

That's no longer the case and I wrote a little about what happened and why I want this back.

Reading papers again for the first time in a while and it feels so good

Don't think you can get away with just learning Worcester I've got a whole list of town names with spellings that are barely related to how they're pronounced.

My toxic trait is asking folk trying to do a Boston accent to read "Worcester" aloud.

I just made something that could be called BBQ curry risotto and I can't stop eating it

Hot pot but make it Italian

Could you electroporate cells with a defibrillator?

I'll cater. Anyone here like curry and rice?

Every time I see someone posting from my local #StandupForScience rally in SF I get giddy. We were all there! We care! We're not just profile picks on a microblogging app. WE HAVE MASS. This rocks and we should get more organized.

This machine kills fascists #standupforscience2025

I'm so food motivated

Dream life is to own a lab liquidation business how can we make this happen

Software is in too many things. Software was never meant to be in cars.

Never have I wanted a draft button more

Used this to get admin on my school laptop and almost got expelled.

One of the best experiences of my entire formal education was doing an NSF funded REU and it's safe to say that I wouldn't be working in the sciences without it.
