Like, any normal person in the role of judge, behind a veil of ignorance about the partisanship of the people involved in these cases, would say, "Hey man, the U.S. is not currently under invasion by Venezuela. Get out of here with that."

It's the same across the board. The claim is the Pendleton Act and subsequent legislation actually didn't bind the president, just no previous president realized it. And the claim is any president can assert the U.S. is being invaded by Venezuela (or any country) and deport anyone they want.

They are absurd/frivolous legal claims that an impartial judiciary would reject as contrary to the text and the traditional meaning of these laws. The bet seems to be that Republican appointed judges won't enforce the laws. It remains to be seen if that prediction is correct or not.
