Protester-initiated violence (again, irrespective of police violence), helped move the public towards concern for “social control.” In 1968, I find violent protests likely caused a 1.6-7.9% shift among whites towards Nixon’s “law and order” campaign and helped tip the election. 16/

Kinda like the #1 rule of political economy is that the status quo is the status quo because people don't like the alternatives in aggregate. There's a lot of assumption our bad regulatory state was set up in good faith, but ultimately a lot were set up to benefit a real, malicious constituency.

I would say it’s only partially due to WWII. Konfrontasi was the other thing that was terrifying and LKY was always personally terrified of not having a bigger power defend Singapore—he tried to delay independence for this reason

I know the British retreated super quickly on the Malay peninsula; I do not know if that counts as abandonment. For Singapore there was a Defence it was just incompetent (also related to both the Japanese had total naval superiority due to British incompetence) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking...

Common phenomenon in codes – somebody pushes for larger spaces for a rare purpose, but then it gets more commonly used in unintended and even counterproductive ways. Like fire officials demanding super wide streets for fire trucks, which people then speed down.

I have a hard time caring b/c if we were to do purity contests over environmental impact I'm confident I'd beat most of the complainers (have never owned a car and walk/bike everywhere)

Even in urban areas money is far from the only problem! We need to address why it takes $2 billion to build 1 mile of subway in Manhattan or $100 million to make a single subway station accessible, otherwise it’ll be hard to get buy-in for investment even in urban areas
