I just tend to reserve the nastiness for research that’s bad—rather than research I agree with and which is obviously attempting to make other research less bad as well.

That’s not true at all! I hate scientists saying political things I agree with, too*. Obviously there are loads of edge cases but there are some things that are unambiguously political. *e.g. I wanted Harris to win the US Election but hated that Nature endorsed her.
