I’d add this: Decades of studies have shown that large groups want to be seen as legitimate, and largely self-police yahoos prone to violence — until law enforcement starts using violence, at which point they unite against a common enemy. It’s a lesson too few PDs ever seem to learn.

This is horrible take. It was always going to be this way. Trump and his cronies always wanted control. They want an excuse for more autocratic and authoritarian role. To simply say “don’t provoke them” misses the entire point. If people don’t push back now, it’s over before it’s even started.
