That said, on Friday nights, the entire staff of the Peoria Journal-Star, which had a magnificent building for the newsroom and printing plant, would head to a bar called The Basket Case for karaoke — from the publisher down to the summer interns. I was hooked, for that and other reasons.

I didn’t mean to take this in this direction but: Keep trying. The Omaha World-Herald declined me for their internship. I spent a summer at the Peoria Journal-Star (which was a great summer). But I couldn’t even afford to live in the city limits of Peoria.

You had to reach a stupid high score. Then take an actual photograph of the screen. Then you had to go get the film developed. Then you had to mail it in. Then you waited for like 3 months. Then you got these sweet patches!
