Worst news imaginable.

Part of me hoped that it was insecticides that caused declining insect numbers -which would mean a reversal was possible. But this scenario is disastrous.

Keep those cyclists safe.

Nothing seems to be enough to have this crisis treated like - a crisis.

I wonder when consumers will get around to worrying about a poor harvest?

Serious situation for food producers

I don't think you'll see any leadership of this kind from Dorset Council. There's a council farm in my village and it's just used by a contractor to grow forage maize. Then they drive heavy machinery all over it when it's wet. Terrible impact on the soil.

There are big problems ahead. Research in support of a strong food policy is needed. The crops that we currently rely on, depend on quite specific weather patterns - which will change in very unpredictable ways.

Anyone who thinks the Constitution will protect them from this outcome is probably wrong.

Totally agree. It's so obvious.

Well this paints a rosy picture. While celebrating the cultivation of chickpeas and oranges in the UK you'll need to remember that cultivation of such crops will likely cease in other countries that have become too hot and dry.

And recent research shows you have plenty of pesticide in your home too.

The House of Lords is complete nonsense. An elected upper house please.

I've just started reading my library copy. It's very interesting and infuriating.

I wonder if politicians realise that photosynthesis grows plants and without plants you can't feed all those unfortunate animals caught in the factory farming debacle.

The national sense of optimism has been drained away by Brexit

Most consumer plastic comes from supermarkets. Why not start there.

The perfect Tory leader then.

Turns out that to see off Farage the government chooses to be more like him.

Killing animals for entertainment is big business and of course it attracts a certain class of clientele. No politician had the balls to take them on.

I don't understand why Labour, in order to fend off Farage and the fascists, makes themselves a little bit more like - Farage and the fascists. You'd have thought offering an alternative might be worth a go.

Absolutely. Very happy to maintain the policies of Patel and Braverman.

People aren't really getting that it's all about survival - for humans.

Same here. Researching new project right now!

We always look out for your Guardian cartoons. It's hard to know how to live in the world as we find it today - but pointing out the absurdities as you do is a helpful release, I think! So pleased to know you'll be continuing to carry the torch.

And why do animals spontaneously expire in intensive production systems? Don't forget that antibiotics are already in the feed so it's pretty scary.

Complete fantasy

Isn't designating some land for farming and some food nature a fundamental problem? Biodiversity will continue to plummet if farming practice does not change to make space for nature.
comment in response to post
I fear we will wait too long. It's only when crop production is severely impacted that society will be willing to confront the issue of feeding farm animals for human food. In other words - let's adopt a plant based diet while the climate still allows us to grow plants.

Why is slaughtering animals called 'meatpacking' these days? Is it perhaps to disguise the horror of what's actually going on?

When I walk the lanes around my Dorset village I wonder when it was that walkers, cyclists and horse riders ceded all road users rights to the car.
