Developed "with experts on fundamental rights, a child psychologist and an expert on child protection" - and not one of them found anything wrong in normalising being in handcuffs, apparently.

A constant appeasement to the far right with no evidence of any benefits. Not even political ones (if people are afraid of voters, they should maybe choose another line of work)

Congratulations Jay and best of luck.
Your work has been hugely influential on my studies and my work, in and out of journalism. I still remember our only conversation- in Greensboro, NC (about 20 years ago!) about blogging and the public - and your rec of Putnam’s book on civic traditions in Italy!

People who know how the system works and work on that every day to protect people (like @minnierahman.bsky.social ) are telling you about the issue but you seem to be considering this like a rooting-for-a-football team approach. The only people who can never win are asylum seekers, it seems.

You still have the process every request and the assumption that these people mostly won't meet the criteria is just an untested assumption. As is that you can return them, in case. Meanwhile system is clogged and people from unsafe countries won't get any help either. These are humans, not packages

I gotta say I always found confusing the use - and subsequent debate - of “global majority” to refer to “ethnic minorities” in the UK: in my experience, I have mainly seen it used (and “owned”) by activists outside of Europe/US as opposed to “Global South”

Well, when it comes to migration it’s been the case for quite a while
