If I remember back in the day using the hotkey to swap between hardware and software rendering fixed the cutscenes but I bet there's a better solution now.

For me it was getting locked into an hours-long expositional dialogue with a tree. The combat was limp and the aesthetics dull in that early Unreal Engine way, but it was the tree that sent me over the edge.
