I love birds that just say their names for you. The Western Wood Pewee is an exceptional animal in this regard.

I think the herons at my local patch are just about ready to fledge

enthusiastically texting my partner about the sex lives of catfish to show that I'm thinking of him somehow this is not received as a grand romantic gesture

The mojave rattlesnake has strikingly large scales on the top of its head - an identifying feature. For some reason it has an undeserved reputation for being particularly fearsome. I wouldn’t pet it, but like all rattlesnakes, it just wants to be left alone. #herps 🐍

Deep in the Pyrenees and barely into France, we saw a handful of Fire Salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) in the forest today. I saw this species in Belgium three weeks ago, so today’s observations help serve to bookend my trip. #herps #salamanders 🌿

Oh no I'm back in my feelings (extremely positive)

Bronco is a wild name for a cat

An absolutely stunning female Grey Phalarope in summer plumage at Loch of Spiggie, Shetland today. Unlike their Red-necked cousins which breed here in small numbers, Greys are extremely rare in spring and thus rarely enjoyed in this incredible plumage. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds

My nephew left a stuffed animal behind and will be getting it back when he visits Seattle in a week after next. I obviously need to Photoshop a few pictures of Eevee to explain his long absence. Where should he go?

I spent an hour today poking my long-defunct print store back into life, in case you need a nice photo of a bird for your wall. snakephotographer.smugmug.com

Please enjoy this ridiculously cute butterfly, which was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. It's in the butterfly family called metalmarks (Riodinidae). Males, like these, have reduced front legs and perch using only the rear 4 (females can use all 6). Sarota acantus; Costa Rica 🐙🌿 #insects

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

Birds have impeccable timing. We don't regularly have Violet-Green Swallows around our yard - but I have twice photographed them on the peak of our house *exactly one year apart* June 2, 2024 (L) & June 2, 2025 (R)

I am just catching up on news. Things are awful for marginalised people right now, and I sincerely hope everyone who needs it can find a little rest and peace.

Oh to be a bunny eating grass in the morning dew

Canada goslings go through such gorgeously scrungly stages

Making sure he looks beautiful for his adoring fans (Teals only! Humans DNI!)

I too wish for snacks to fall into my open maw

I love the little clerical collars on Bank Swallows

Sorry, this is a private nest party. You can't come in.

Byeeeeee

Gotta maintain a united front in the face of crows who want to steal your snacks

I have this bird tentatively IDed as a California Gull but I keep questioning this, and would welcome expertise

My beloved shorties are all up in Alaska right now but the Ring-Billed Gulls will never abandon me.

plz share your best tern puns

Ah yes the horror classics "teenage sex leads to chaos and murder" and "periods are horrifying" were definitely not message films.
