I loved the language appendices in the Lord of the Rings; it helped me recommend a middle name for my niece: Elerrína "Crowned with stars". They chose the less Tolkienesque spelling of "Ellerina" in the end.

The problem is that you think it's a zero sum game: just because one is elevating female voices and candidates doesn't mean they're putting down male ones - that's your interpretation reflecting your own world view. Try not to be such a snowflake. Bye!

She was encouraging Cooke - you came in with your BS accusation and she’s responding with satire and not laying out a feminist manifesto. Your thinly veiled condescension is one of the reasons why women are turning away from MAGA

I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t vote for Marjorie Taylor-Greene, Tulsi Gabbard or Lauren Bobert. But this Rebecca Cooke seems way better than any of them (to be fair, that’s a pretty low bar)

I think you’re missing the subtext - he wants to stop brown immigrants. I’m sure he’s fine with, say, white South Africans

Makes the British public's choice of "Boaty McBoatface" seem like a harmless bit of fun, really www.rmg.co.uk/stories/ocea....

No-one is ignoring people's actions: I'm just saying that they make choices for a whole bunch of reasons, some of which are related to their gender, and that pretending those factors don't exist only strengthens that existing power dynamic.

I'd love to know how waitressing fits into things - your campaign web site calls you a "small business owner and non-profit leader" and doesn't mention this waitressing in the evenings.

Frankly, it's not women who have been swallowing Trump's MAGA BS.

Glaurung fully grown led Morgoth's armies, including the balrogs, so I expect he would be mightier than they, and more than Sauron at the time as well. Ancalagon the Black was the mightiest ever and I expect would be easily the greater power. Impossible to say with the others.
comment in response to post
Theirs seemed more like a peer relationship, where the balrogs were Morgoth's personal guard and warriors, whereas Sauron was Morgoth's sensechal, adviser and schemer. By the time Sauron became the dark lord, the balrogs were no more, except for Durin's Bane. And that one didn't answer to him.

If someone thinks a Europa League win - after 17 years without any trophies - tastes disgusting, it’s no wonder that “Spursy” is a thing. And I suspect the owners didn’t say “make a chicken dish” but just said “make something delicious”

And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns, in dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the north wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.

And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of war nor of wizardry, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.
comment in response to post
"Old fool!" he said. "Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!" And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.

As much as I love the movies, there are some things they fall hopelessly short of when compared to the books. One is the majesty and power of Shadowfax, and another is the terror and might of the Witch-King, especially in this very moment. And then the joy at the horns of the Rohirrim!

The Black Rider flung back his hood, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter.

"You cannot enter here," said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. "Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your Master. Go!"

All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dínen.

I have to say that my favourite game set in Ivalice was Vagrant Story - I loved the game mechanics but also the story was gothic and atmospheric and creepy and superbly done.

The interesting thing I thought was that the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the hieroglyphs etc has no impact on his viewing experience or pleasure: but it does to others, and by making the effort, the moviemakers have satisfied both. Win-Win! It doesn't always have to be Win-Lose...

Definitely: even if it were a limited series, it'd be really hard to adequately explain an elf lord who died defending the retreat of Idril and Tuor at the fall of Gondolin from a balrog but after being re-embodied in Valinor was sent back to Middle-earth by Manwë some time in the Second Age...

What does the picture of Morgoth wearing the iron crown with three silmarils in it have to do with Ainulindalë, the account of the Music of the Ainur at the beginning of creation? This can only be from Quenta Silmarillion, and before the tale of Beren and Lúthien.

Ange-ball definitely has some vulnerabilities - you need to be super fit to play it consistently well, and clearly he’s been pushing his players hard at training, which contributes to the injury toll. It’s why it’s a longer term project that can’t be judged this early by EPL results alone
comment in response to post
And yet, some fans want to sack him because they think they could have won the Europa Cup AND finished higher on the League table. Now THAT would be an absolutely Spursy thing to do!
comment in response to post
I think it would have to "start" with the awakening of the First Children of Ilúvatar and their discovery by Oromë - all that had come beforehand would fit into a sort of narrative introduction, much like in the beginning of the movie of The Fellowship of the Ring, and then move into the Rebeliion

I'm sorry - that's a nice horse, sure, but it's not "The Lord of All Horses", not even close. Nor was the one in the movie. It's one of the things that I think is impossible to replicate in a live action movie.

If it had been 20 years earlier, Christopher Lee might have played Gandalf. Hard to imagine anyone but Sir Ian McKellen doing it, now, and Peter Jackson did say that they couldn't imagine anyone else being as perfect for Saruman as Christopher Lee youtu.be/CiprQzPlWE4?...

Ah, but you'll notice that I made no mention of Anakin in my original post, since I agree with you that Anakin didn't turn to the Dark Side because he thought it was cool. Although I would add to your quite valid list the thing that made the biggest difference, which was Stupidity 😜
comment in response to post
And this is how Melkor first seduced many of the Ainur to his service. And if we're mixing metaphors, why so many people think the Dark Side is so much cooler.

I love much so much of Tolkien's poetry: it's got that cadence that works so well as a chant.

I particularly like the line "Then again, I am an impetuous writer with no responsibility for governing, much less for managing a relationship with the most powerful country on Earth when that country happens to be ruled by a nutcase."
comment in response to post
I thought this was fine: I was less fine with the depiction that the Rohirrim were "running away" to Helm's Deep, when they were in fact rode out to fight Saruman and only turned aside to go to the fortress at Gandalf's advice after the disaster at the fords of Isen.

If anything, attention should be directed to his inner circle of advisers who couldn't find the courage to tell him that he shouldn't run for a 2nd term. It's hard when you love someone, but letting them do that to themselves isn't loving them, it's abandoning them.

Having a meal together is a good way of getting to know someone a little better, and maybe a bit less awkward than "Let's talk about what's being said here". Valid reasons to not accept said invitation, but Dana could have suggested an alternative like a Zoom call.

Lord of Light was his first novel and it’s awesome. His short story collections are excellent. The first Chronicles of Amber are wonderful if a little patchy at the start, the Second Chronicles have lots of interesting ideas but is essentially unfinished. He’s one of my favourite authors of all time

Lots of great quotes, but my favourite scene doesn't really fit into a series of posts. Nor could the movies do it justice, because of the pacing and because you already know who's on the ships with black sails. www.facebook.com/valleyofImla...

It’s also great to pay attention to the back stories they create for their PCs and figure out ways to incorporate that into your game. Just don’t overdo it or they’ll limit their PCs to orphans and loners if their loved ones are always somehow in danger…

I love the background lore that published campaigns supply but you don’t have to be slaved entirely to their version events. Adapting them to the player’s interests is part of the fun, and they often give great ideas you can expand on.
