80s androgyny was an absolute vibe though

here eat a higher quality version then!!! :3

afaik swiftui shaders work view-dependent

i need sooo much help you have no idea... there's no way I can do it in a reasonable timeframe without help :S
comment in response to post
so I need more than just shape, I need texture and composition and a ton more stuff... and it all has to be cohesive design and all...
comment in response to post
well I'm kinda making mine for AR/VR and so am thinking I want the base elements to be made of dust/gas as it's impalpable and then when it's active or interacted with it is energized and becomes plasma... and Gaussian Splatting fits that perfectly (attached is an unfinished redesign of the logo)
comment in response to post
does this also apply to UX design though? been obsessed with making a design language that is highly consistent yet diverse and like.... it kinda sucks rn thinking about all this in theory

ai training for them but not for you, you try to sue them and they'll wear you down... this isn't a victory by a long shot

volumetric ui library??? oooh tell me more
comment in response to post
ohhh everyone's unified on that not being okay? that's good....

wait what is that line?

jesus that's an order of magnitude
comment in response to post
I think it's more the lead tbh, stimulants overstimulated my brain and sucked

I can't see it being a new system at all... maybe new APIs for lighting but def not the underlying rendering techniques

take* HOW HAVE MOBILE KEYBOARDS NOT IMPROVED AUTOCORRECT THAT IS LITERALLY THE 1 THING AN LLM DOES
comment in response to post
I wish, but tbh that system is likely the same shader system as blurring backgrounds which swiftUI and Qt have had for a decade... since elements are drawn back to front you can tsje the pixels of anything behind your object and sample from other parts (refraction) or such
comment in response to post
it's not that, more like it feels they cheaped out on this... 1 material that looks pretty applied inconsistently just to make things look shiny isn't a good redesign... it's a marketing stunt and feels like a distraction from AI failures rushed out the door
comment in response to post
I'm all for good aesthetics but frutiger aero had soooo many more materials to play with and make great UI with... feels like liquid glass is minimalism with refraction instead of neither minimalism or maximalism... a balance like Aqua which created new things but not too many...
comment in response to post
I worry they never learned the better lesson, tie the aesthetics deeply to functionality! make them show the nuance of the connotation of action! liquid glass randomly pops up from flat elements and is depth for separation but also is for sliders/toggles activation but is also not for list items?
comment in response to post
I can't see how this transitions into MR really... it's 1 material used for everything and doesn't have as good of contrast as visionOS...
comment in response to post
idk I like the direction but it's not enough and they absolutely did not do frutiger aero with this one... it's mostly flat and there's a flat to glass transition and just... doesn't feel cohesive, glass is a special effect rather than a core interface primitive it feels like.
comment in response to post
blame Jony Ive, he's the one that flattened everything
comment in response to post
also hot take but if they wanted to go full ham on glass they should have added caustics, the cowards didn't do the pretty light effects like they should have
comment in response to post
it really feels like a half-baked material design 1 but with glass, you got the floating action buttons and the shadows (or refractions) to signify depth but unlike material 1 where color contrast is interactivity and depth is separation... this has no color contrast really and it's not opaque!
comment in response to post
so it's not really as big a redesign as they claim! it's nice for some things (i do adore the color/dark mode icons) but for other things like... well, most of the controls and the lists and such it doesn't serve a purpose but flashiness.... glass != interactable, glass = floaty thing??? i guess?
comment in response to post
tbh something nobody's mentioned is that there are still flat things!!! it's not just glass, it's glass and flat design... and the flat design can morph into glass like with the tab bars so it's jarring, it's like.... a special effect instead of an emergent property? hard to know what's what!
comment in response to post
am UX designer and frutiger aero enjoyer so i've thought deep about this whole thing :3
comment in response to post
so it's not the same charm as frutiger aero, aero had many manyyy more variations on texture and light and material and so on that this just doesn't have... it's too far minimalist imo... still better than google's though, they destroyed color and shape and texture coding entirely in their UI!!!
comment in response to post
i'd take this over material 3 expressive anyday but i think only using glass is a huge problem where they have no other materials to compensate for the weaknesses of glass... windows aero and aqua had many materials and glass was used sparingly making them well balanced and readable! this doesn't
comment in response to post
ok do that but also MAKE IT READABLE sincerely: an aesthetics nerd with bad contrast vision

steamvr doesn't work with rift S on linux you should be able to get the headset running with Monado, head tracking is more reliable than most headsets on monado, controller tracking afaik is working but not the best soooo in terms of ease? use envision and make a monado profile...

youtu.be/eCc4md8Cuy8 honestly this anime made me realize 3D anime can actually be stupidly good, it feels like the other 3D anime was cargo culting the framerate and linework of 2D but this one genuinely used the medium well
comment in response to post
90% of the compelling sci fi AR/VR stuff isn't possible because the operating systems are too restrictive and the headsets built put the computer and battery on the head reducing comfort massively... you can't just pop out a 3D app and use it with others, even apple's headset is too restrictive

it's broad approximate intelligence... like how digital cameras can see outside visible light but suck at dynamic range

it's sad that so few kids learned that the content isn't how you tell if something on the internet is real or fake but instead the context... wish schools taught that
comment in response to post
but the reason that happens is due to parents not having time to parent their kids due to earning enough money to survive and all so like.... it's a problem that won't be solved until we actually fix many other societal problems :S
