Nick the Baby Dragon is saving us all.

I've mostly played D&D 5e in recent years. But my introduction to actively and socially playing TTRPGs forever ago was Pathfinder, and specifically Society, so it has a warm place in my heart.

Feels like it's been years since I've gotten to say "I'll hold my action..." Feels gooood.

We have
Larry the ill-mannered pirate, Haydus the Half-Elf Magus, Tyler the Hunter with Nick the baby dragon,
and Brula the party-herding Paladin

Totally should have included a (nonderogatory) or (endearment) tone indicator!

"Capitalize pope when used as a title before a name: Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Paul. Lowercase pope in all other uses."

I know the end point is that parents should be involved and connect their kids to reading. But I just want people to know that you're not a monster if you don't like reading to your kids. Just like you're not a monster if you don't like *playing* with your kids. But that's for another thread.

What I have found makes the biggest difference in both early and later years is reading AROUND your kids. If I curl up on the couch with a book, they will find one and do the same next to me. Have books around the house for them to find. Let them explore at the library.

It was miserable and didn't work for me. It's ok to be different. Instead, I enjoy teaching and training and modeling behavior. I'm happy for my kids to read to me. (Though that puts me to sleep, too, sometimes.)

But I HATED reading bedtime stories. In those early years, I was SO TIRED. I had twins and then a toddler and I worked full time and I would often fall asleep in the middle of Good Night Moon.

I'm secure in saying this for a lot of reasons. I was a bookworm/binge-reader as a kid. I love reading solo. I spent years as a reading tutor for children with ADHD and dyslexia. All of my children could read before entering school (because I intentionally taught them). My kids read for joy now.

It's so hard because often times when you start discussing the system to add clarity or perspective to a problem, people knee-jerk want to dismiss you as being hyperbolic or trying to say that YOU are saying it's unsolvable. But acknowledging the system is a first step to making things solvable!

It really is such a more delightful way to parent.
Kid: "I really want to say a bad word right now..."
Me: "Go ahead, just do it right or make it funny or else you are going to embarrass yourself."
