“White Horse” by Laid Back is another one of those songs. I had no idea until the late 90s that it was a couple of Danish dudes.

Dude’s a fuckin’ herb. All that money and power, and he gets sad and whiny and vindictive when people don’t like him.

That movie is so achingly beautiful, I bought a 4K player in part to watch it.

There’s no need whatsoever to apologize. It’s an absolutely fucking terrifying situation, and I’m so glad they let her go.

Even if there are rules in place, it’s clear that no one would even deign to attempt to compel him to divest. So yeah, it’ll just be de facto state media.

I was about to say that you might be able to say that about early 2000s Paul Graham, but even then he was railing about “political correctness” in his essays.

I tried to read the thread, and my brain kept resetting.

Varmints is probably the best start. From there, you can go to her soundtracks (Eighth Grade, Tuesday), her more classical work (Anno, Nuc), more pop-aligned (Fibs), or whimsical experiments (Bumps per Minute).

That sounds simultaneously hilarious and awful.

I’d get a new pen, and use the old one as an excuse to learn pen repair, if you’re inclined. (Which may be one of the things I try this year)

As someone who’s not cis, but not trans either, I’m in the midst of reading it. It’s bringing back a lot of feelings I’ve had, especially about understanding my gender, and it’s an emotionally intense ride.

It’s like that scene from Commando where they’ve broken into a store and are getting rocket launchers and shit: youtu.be/c4_XcnxQxVs

And I will admit that, because I haven’t listened to any of their albums, just singles and such, I haven’t given them a fair shake. (There’s lots of bands like that for me, that I got into many years after the fact.)

I don’t dislike Radiohead, but I’ve never been moved to listen to a full album of theirs. I like what I heard, but I wasn’t drawn to them. (There’s a lot of music like that for me, and I try to carefully distinguish between “this is awful music” and “this music isn’t for me, and it’s still good”)

I’ve been wrestling with my gender for a bit now, but this hits different, in a parallel way to how HDG got me.

You (and a couple of others) have gotten me to start reading it, and holy shit it’s great and intense and is bringing up all kinds of things.

When I was a tween, I read a lot of Tom Clancy and similar novels and fell down the rabbit hole of ICBMs, SSBNs, and such. Abjectly terrifying.

this is just another round of “what constitutes canon? what does engagement with the text look like? what constitutes a valid text, even?” that has been going on for decades if not centuries. Allan Bloom filtered through Pepe the Frog.
