Breaking News: José Mujica, the leftist former president of Uruguay known for his humility, has died at 89. Known as Pepe, he had a reputation as a savvy leader of the country's progressive coalition, his informal governing style baffled the establishment. nyti.ms/45cnutZ

Congestion pricing was designed to finance more than $15 billion in critical transit upgrades in New York City. Those investments will take years. But the parallel changes at street level are already apparent. Here’s what we know so far. nyti.ms/4mbuGg0

Congestion pricing works.

CEGA research has spurred progress to save lives. As we recalibrate to reduced foreign aid, one thing is clear: we must continue to invest in evidence. Bill Gates announced that he will close his foundation decades earlier than planned so that he can spend down the endowment more rapidly. “It allows us to do a lot more because we’re not trying to steward our money for some weird legacy thing.” More of this! www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/m...

The effects of Medicaid expansion under the ACA from Wyse and Meyer (Dartmouth): 1. *Lives saved*: 21% reduction in the mortality hazard of new enrollees. 2. *Cost-effective*: $179,000 per life-year saved.

You've heard of the many analysts projects, right? Scholars give the same dataset/question to a bunch of researchers & they still get different answers. Why is that? Data cleaning! This is consistent with Gelman's "garden of forking paths." Small coding decisions often drive results.

Grateful to @voxdev.bsky.social for featuring our paper with @fscoamodio.bsky.social and Serafin! What’s it about? The surprising domestic economic ripple effects of this image… 🧵Full thread in the comments.

The key chart right now: Usually US economic pain is cushioned by falling bond yields and a strengthening dollar, which mean lower interest rates and more spending power for consumers. This time we’re seeing the opposite, meaning the pain will be amplified.

Previous to the FDA, folks would put chalk and plaster of Paris in milk to make it appear white. They could also add formaldehyde to cover the smell and taste of spoiled milk.

Van Hollen on Fox News Sunday: "I'm not vouching for the man. I'm vouching for the man's rights. His constitutional rights to due process."

This is getting out of control #econsky

Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools) Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants

I don't really care what the "political consequences" are of fighting for the proposition that *everyone* is entitled to due process before they are removed from the United States and sent to a Salvadoran prison. It's not really a principle if you only adhere to it when it's politically expedient.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

New preprint finding that eliminating US global health funding over the next fifteen years would cause: - 15.2m deaths from AIDS - 2.2m deaths from TB - 7.9 additional child deaths

A couple thoughts on this: 1. It violates the law. In 1998, Congress explicitly provided that the President could not, directly or indirectly, request that the IRS start or end an audit or other investigation of a taxpayer. www.taxnotes.com/research/fed... 1/

Steve Kerr wore a Harvard basketball shirt after the Warriors’ win tonight: “Yes, this is me supporting Harvard. Way to go. Way to stand up to the bully.”

“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.” Diary of Anne Frank January 13, 1943

The possibility of abduction by a sovereign and imprisonment abroad is one criterion that separates democracies from dictatorships. The Declaration of Independence called the British king tyrannical for transporting Americans, “beyond Seas to be tried for pretended Offenses.”

Before the election, I warned that there is no safe haven under authoritarianism. If they can ship Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a foreign prison—accused of no crime, with no trial—they can do it to anyone. Americans of conscience must stand against this now.

Today is tax day 🤓 Did you know that undocumented immigrant workers pay $100 billion/yr in taxes? This money goes toward social safety net programs like Social Security & Medicare—programs they can't even benefit from. Learn more in @dcosta.bsky.social's new FAQ: www.epi.org/publication/...

Even if you (wrongly) believe that some immigrants lack due process rights, what’s to stop the government from claiming that *you* are an undocumented immigrant; removing you to El Salvador; citing an “administrative error”; and refusing to do anything to bring you back? The answer is due process.

bloomberg: ~90% of deported migrants to el salvador had no criminal record

Thank you President Garber. “No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.” view.hu.harvard.edu?qs=351b45ebf...

In defiance of the Supreme Court & without any evidence, the White House claims that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a “terrorist,” who was “sent to the right place.” This is a blatant LIE. He is innocent. He cannot be allowed to rot in an El Salvadorian jail. He must be brought home.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

On World Parkinson’s Day, I’m thinking of all who’ve struggled with the condition. I’m glad that last year President Biden signed into law a bill I cosponsored that combats Parkinson’s and related conditions. I’ll keep working to support research efforts to end Parkinson’s for good.
