If you see a bee swarm in Finland, call to the swarm alert number of the national beekeebers' association 050 3444 297, some beekeper living close by will come and catch it hunaja.net/artikkelit/h...

There they are in a closed box (bottom ventilated). Now for a day they can sit there and think what they have done, tomorrow into a new hive.

I totally agree with you about the problems related to beekeeping in general. Also mine must have some kind of impact. But as the articles you shared highlight issues of European bees in North America, might have been nicer to find a video from there, not from Europe...

Beekeeping isn’t without its challenges—especially when hives are packed too closely together. In some sensitive areas it can lead to competition for resources, for example. But on bonus side, I’ve learned to appreciate dandelions, willows and other "weeds" more than ever.

Are low-density hives of local bee races like Apis mellifera mellifera in the Nordics also banned from World Bee Day celebrations?

Great movies! I'll use the chance to promote a couple of Finnish WW2 movies that have been quite well received: Winter War / Talvisota (1989) The Uknown Soldier / Tuntematon sotilas (2017, there are also 1955 and 1985 versions of the same story)

No work without a project, and here it's "Circularity-integrated mining (CINTEM)" led by @gtk-fi.bsky.social and funded by Business Finland

The old frames and waxes will be melted, and the boxes disinfected before use.

Saw already some bees returning with leg bags filled with pollen. Alders are blooming, which are the first ones to provide any significant amounts of pollen for the bees. Also a few coltsfeet here and there.

After playing a bit Civ 7, I think I shall move back to Civ 6 😐 Furthermore, I think that Alpha Centauri should be updated/remade (and available for Switch).

Here's the compressed night of March 22-23, 2025. Some, but not too great auroras

All my four hives are still doing well, so 0% winter losses for me this year bsky.app/profile/teem...

Typical US bee hive winter losses of 40-50% sound a bit hight too. In Finland it's around 10%

Perfect timing, some auroras showing up

GeoDays is a cozy, small-scale Finnish national geological conference. It rotates between the cities where geology is taught: Helsinki, Turku, and Oulu. More about this year: www.oulu.fi/en/events/ge...

So, my first winter as a beekeeper is starting to be almost over. Maybe I don't need to find a new hobby after all... This winter was quite mild, only halfish meter of snow left around the hives.

Finns waving flags might be a bit too much, but woohoo my EU flag patch just arrived!
