This film definitely deserves far more attention than it gets. Solid storytelling that doesn't rely on a huge budget or flashy effects.

If Willie Loman was a gangster, he'd be Pacino in this. Great film!

And then there's the role of Zen Buddhism in Japanese nationalism in WWII.
And I say this as a former Buddhist who still has much love and respect for the tradition.

I really don't get the appeal of shelling out so much cash just to look like you're in a permanent state of anaphylactic shock.

You're So Vain is such a brilliant song of course, and I love Anticipation. But there's also a great, apocalyptic b-side from Anticipation called "Share the End" which is bone-chilling.

Yes, E.T. and Poltergeist really overshadowed them. Even Firefox did better at the time -- which I imagine has been largely forgotten:

1. 12 Angry Men
2. Fail Safe
3. Dog Day Afternoon
4. Serpico
5. Network
The first two are in my top 20 favorite films. Great director!

This was one my dad introduced me to about 30 years ago. He never recommended a bad movie to me ever!

And showing how the more moving parts there are, the more likely something can break down - including all kinds of human factors. Such an incredible film.

This film addressed the notion talked about in pundit circles at that time that there could be such thing as a "limited" nuclear war. So Lumet gave audiences just that, with only two cities - but the horror isn't diminished by being "limited."

One of most horrifying film endings. I know it's probably blasphemous to say this, but I love Fail Safe more than Dr. Strangelove (don't get me wrong, Dr. S is great also - but Fail Safe is just so STARK).

Yes, this - and the director intentionally filmed STII that way. It's one of the rare instances of a sequel being good - but it's good precisely because you DON'T have to be a trekkie to enjoy this film or to have seen Space Seed - it's just good storytelling and it stands well on its own.

The correct spelling is "franchi$e" - it's all about the studios making more money. And poor storytelling.

A familiar sight (not my photo). I remember being nine or ten crawling way out to the tip of the breakers at Pinetamare (my parents never knew!), surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea. 🇮🇹

But what I miss isn't just the place, but that specific time. Loss and heartache but also the irrevocable beauty of that time all mingled together in memory-impressions buried deep inside myself. I just don't know why it hits me out of the blue like this from time to time.
