And the Amorce platform has posted a fantastic series to celebrate Amateur Movie Day. Each hour they have highlighted an amateur film from their network of archives that highlights environmental themes. #amateurmovieday2025 www.amorce.eu/parcours-l-e...

Thanks- and yes, totally agree. I had never really thought about this as a genre before. Here's another one the student references in the paper: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3Z5...

And much more... Students had so many ideas about how amateur media has permeated digital culture and everyday life. How it inflects our understanding of indie/microbudget filmmaking. I learned a ton from this course and from my students. Check out these examples!

Amateur animators have also found each other - and their fandoms - on YouTube. Multi Animator Projects are a fascinating development, with amateur media making emerging among ever-younger makers. I have a particular soft spot for the Warrior Cats videos (don't ask): youtu.be/Ji9ciMqrjOc?...

YouTube also facilitated the widespread popularity of 'creepypastas' - which included an astonishing range of amateur(ish) horror videos. From fake found footage films to atmospheric nightmare videos, this is an enormous category of media making. www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4dG...

Soon, YouTube emerged as the major platform for amateur media dissemination. Several students wrote about how the site facilitated the professionalization of many content creators who started out as amateurs. "Smosh" is one great example of this trend: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJXK...

But a seismic shift was already taking place in how amateurs were using digital technology to make new work, connect with each other, and spread their work on the internet. Machinima was one fascinating site of this activity: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BAM...

The proliferation of video technology has provided new materials for other kinds of documentaries too. One student wrote about how amateur footage is used to document the turn of millennium music scene in "Meet Me in the Bathroom." www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgHN...

Many students were inspired by Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation- especially the way he mines his personal archive of amateur footage to produce a compelling film memoir. Some used this as a starting point for looking at recent indie films some made their own films in response. youtu.be/Gz74_hpl9bU?...

One student explored the amateur genre of 'house tours' which emerged alongside video camcorders in the 1980s. Today we can see the descendants of this amateur form in many popular Tik Tok videos. youtu.be/uGKjSpRoz8Q?...
