Good morning from Dartmoor, Charles, where it's been bright and hot this week. Lottie has been spending as much time in various bodies of water as she can.

I was involved with my mother's end-of-life care, and now look after a family member whose illness is intermittent but requires immediate, intense care that can knock me off creative work at any moment. Mixing writing and care work is truly hard, and I so appreciate your honest words about it.

I do know people with violent trauma in their backgrounds who write or read horror and find it meaningful and cathartic. We're all so different. I love Trickster myths, and hadn't really thought of Trickster in relation to trauma - but yes, as a boundary-crosser, it makes sense. Thank you for this.

I co-edited the Year's Best Fantasy & Horror anthologies from St Martins Press for 16 years, but the job had a clear division: Ellen Datlow edited the horror side, I edited the fantasy side, and we both covered the stories that fell between the two. I do like dark fantasy, when it's well written.

Ooh, I love wisteria. We have it growing up a fence behind our courtyard.

I'm American-born and still have the accent after all my years in the UK, so the cheetahs/speakers lines gave me pause...until I remember to read them with an English accent. 😂 Brilliant poem!

Here are two more gorgeous paintings that will be in the 'Widdershins III: Moorland Mythic Arts' exhibition this summer: 'Ghosts at Leigh Bridge' and 'The Beech Whisperer' by David Wyatt. For more information on the show and the mythic events surrounding it: www.greenhillarts.co.uk/calendar

I'm also participating in this mythic event in early July. (Tickets have already sold out, but there may be a waiting list.) These events support the Widdershins III: Moorland Mythic Arts exhibition running at Green Hill Arts all summer. www.greenhillarts.co.uk/calendar/vis...

I'm still immersed in deadlines (one down, two more to go) and still dealing with some family stuff ... but Lottie, after a health scare last week, is doing fine. She's back to her joyous self, bless her. I'll be back online more regularly when life eases up a bit.

I love Barry Lopez's work, and it has influenced the way I think about the world. It's hard to pick one favorite, so I'll list three: Arctic Dreams, About This Life, and Horizon. (Though really I love them all, including his fiction and Crow & Weasel.) His death in 2020 was a shock.
