[5/5] Variability in children’s performance on both presentations underlines the risk of assuming fixation or gaze switching skills to be present, and the importance of assessing gaze behaviours in individual children - particularly those expected to use them for communication or computer control.

[4/5] Eye tracking may be better at recording fixations in children with strabismus, where object-based paradigms may offer more flexible administration for clinicians.

[3/5] Eye tracking may present an “entry barrier” for some children in terms of its accuracy and calibration requirements, but object presentation carries with it the risk of over-interpreting children as having fixated.

[2/5] Our study compared the use of an eye tracking computer with expert clinician observations of children's fixation and gaze switching. Whilst it is not possible to say which one is better at producing the "correct" result, the differences are interesting and are discussed in this paper.

Fun Fact! Contrary to popular belief, unicorns contain only trace amounts of sawdust. In fact, one would have to consume over 6,000 unicorns to ingest the Recommended Daily Sawdust Quota (RDSQ) for the average adult!

Joseph M. Butter, of course, did go on to occupy high political office as a result of his military exploits. A fact still commemorated on supermarket shelves to this day…

I don't know who would be crazy enough to buy such an obvious piece of walking, talking, sandwich-making spyware... but I do admire the chutzpah of the "Research" page on their website, which I wish I could get away with...

It's basic stuff we teach our students - don't say "many authors agree that...", "there is substantial evidence that..." or "there are hundreds of articles proving..." if you're not going to produce / cite this "vast number" of sources.

I do not remember this but I have just Googled it (without the aid of crappy AI summaries) and now I fear I may not sleep for the rest of the week...! 🌳

Really hoping it isn’t related to the recent, uncritical exposure it’s received on a certain podcast… hard to know without understanding Google’s algorithm, but that is certainly one recent thing that could have “moved the needle”…?

You may already know this, but you can tweak your accessibility settings to require alt text to be in place before posting, which I find to be a helpful method of jemmying 😊 bsky.app/profile/rnib...

Agreed - and for all those interested in getting rid of it, our colleague @haggistamer.bsky.social posted some useful instructions a few weeks back... bsky.app/profile/hagg...

Lest we forget Old Man Willow from Lord of the Rings: so many childhood nightmares 😳 "the hearts of the trees and their thoughts, which were often dark and strange, and filled with a hatred of things that go free upon the earth, gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning: destroyers and usurpers"

I'm afraid it gets worse... there is a "controversy" section but it's relegated to two bullets at the bottom and you have to expand the section to find it...
