Decided to watch the first part of The Stand, and what a flight of fancy about government ineptitude, individual selfish stupidity, and delusions about “it’s just a regular cold” causing a global pandemic.
Especially the part about a twisted demagogue using it to recreate society in his image.

It gave the Phoenix thing some extra zest, in that the one person who really didn't want that shit thrust upon them ended up as a cosmic being, and it eroded everything she'd accomplished beforehand.
It tied her back to the school and the team & made her doubt her level of control over her powers.
