With Anderson's newie, The Phoenician Scheme, in cinemas this week, we'd love to hear what your favourite is. Controversial choices welcome!

It's funny, smart and formally surprising. The Margot (Paltrow)/Richie (Luke Wilson) relationship is achingly romantic. And that soundtrack, when it lands... oooft. As usual, I shed a tear or two along the way.

Postgrads at the RCA are encouraged to "push against" ideas of what photography is. James gives advice on how to apply to their MA, and (crucially) what to say in your application: www.thedoublenegative.co.uk/2025/05/the-...

We enjoyed the absurdity and terror in James's artwork, I am not a robot, a riff on an Amazon ‘worker cage’ that protects (imprisons?) humans from powerful robotic machinery: www.thedoublenegative.co.uk/2025/05/the-... 🤖

Meanwhile, the city's galleries - most of the usual suspects - lie largely empty; currently in-between spaces, their walls (and, no doubt, other surfaces) waiting to host works by the biennial artists. Spaces as containers awaiting meaning, people, conversations.

Of course, you'd expect a biennial to be in conversation with its host city; this hasn't always been the case (and, indeed, this has long been a criticism of the biennial model generally). I do wish the artist directory showed works alongside the artists' portraits btw!

Curated by Marie-Anne McQuay, it's the third biennial in a row directly addressing aspects of the city. “Liverpool’s foundations and its psyche provide the starting point for the conversations of LB2025, with the invited artists bringing us their own definition[s]. www.biennial.com/2025-artists/
