Scratchy, to be sure. It sounds like my childhood home. It sounds like him. Like the art on the cover, it’s a relic reborn. 🥲 And now, little man, I give the record to you…

I wish I could ask him. I wish I could tell him why some music brings me to tears or makes me feel like I can fly. So I waited until Father’s Day, popped open a (NA) beer, and tried to spin this black circle for the first time in over 40 years.

I trembled! Just holding it was bizarre. My father played this album so often. He cared for it. It mattered to him. I wish I knew why. What were all these songs saying to him? Maybe it was the simple sonic quality of the music though I imagine it was much more.

My sister saved the day by claiming to have some of the records. She dusted off a bin in her garage and we found that bat tearing a new one out of the graveyard!

So the idea that my father’s records might still be a) around and b) operational was a lot to hope for. My mom said the records were given away years ago - and I felt like I lost a chance to connect with him again.

I recently dove into #vinyl in what might be a midlife crisis. In this streaming non-ownership world, I miss tangible media. I miss building a collection. I like the idea of leaving something of significance and usefulness behind. It’s one reason I write; words persist.

How many times can one man listen to “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” and “Paradise By the Dashboard Light”?!

He played ponderous and sad songs like “Taxi” by Harry Chapin and “Same Old Lang Syne” by Dan Fogelberg at a HIGH volume. He blasted Bee Gee’s Greatest Hits, though the album he returned to the most was Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf.

I also remember his love of music. More accurately, his love of the *same* music over and over. I cannot count how many times “Gonna Fly Now” from the Rocky soundtrack rattled the walls of our house.

He was intimidating. My siblings and I were scared to death of him at times. There are lighthearted memories such as the time we sprayed him with a garden hose during one of his tanning sessions in the yard. (I did NOT get his complexion!) He chased us around the house and it was a big joke for all.

The man loved to lift weights, pummel a heavy and speed bag, sunbathe (not a typo), waterski, unwind with alcohol, and watch Monday Night Football. He was also devoted to my older sister’s and brother’s sporting events.

There are few physical items left that connect me with my father. I was 8 when he was killed and my memories now are a combination of lore, stories I’ve heard from the same group of family and friends over the years, and what I think are accurate rememberances.

I try to fathom the stress that man lived with on a daily basis: a harrowing job, a history of trauma, three kids, the trials of marriage; he was just 36. A baby!

Married his high school sweetheart, joined the military, served in Vietnam, went to college, had three kids, joined the NJ State Police, became a narcotics detective, worked multiple cases undercover, and remained in the Army National Guard.

Second night I’m playing #Vinyl No. 8 because it’s been well over 10 years - and I still can’t get enough of Emily Armstrong’s vocals. This rings through my head whenever I feel overburdened by being in leadership at work OR when I think about current events and folks that voted a certain way.

I just started. That was the 7th album I bought. I grew up with their music. Tragic he died so young.

Just bought and played the anniversary edition of Kick. Phenomenal!!

I was only able to pop in for a few minutes. Looked cool. Does your character get stronger over time or is each run its own thing?

Nice! Need to get that one too.

Is that the one with him in space? It’s the only one I saw in a theater. 😂

Gut punch for Oilers. Hope they can pot the next one though!

The consecutive trio of New Sensation, Devil Inside, and Need You Tonight is absurd though I forget how much Kick absolutely slams! #vinyl #nowplaying

Album No. 7 that I’ve purchased. The album is clear. It’s too much sex to process! 🤣 #vinylrecords #nowplaying

Thank you. It’s been fun so far. I miss physical media!! I had a large CD collection and stopped that 15+ years ago. I jettisoned the cases and booklets (regrets).

I’m a sucker for colored vinyl. I got the orchid splatter version.

This year’s RSD is what got me started collecting vinyl. I bought that record before I had a turntable. 😆

Saw them over the years in Minneapolis/St. Paul. I’m hoping they do more together after the current LP run.
