Here's Meghan Grant's story on this terrible case.
Quote: "The judge noted Bigchild was a vulnerable victim and that the crime was "all the more potent" because of the history of power imbalance between the courts and Indigenous people."

We very much appreciate you helping us spread the word but must clarify that we aren't affiliated with Press Progress, though we love what they do!

We think that what we do here at the Report fills an important niche in Alberta media and we'd like to just not survive, but grow. There's more talent out there that needs work. If you can help us get out of this temporary hole we're in, please browse over to www.theprogressreport.ca/patrons.

If we can survive this month, the math going forward looks good. The regular patrons of the Report are pitching in a little bit more than our monthly expenses. But we're caught in a pinch presently with unpaid bills and need a rescue.

Unfortunately Duncan was kind of the most competent guy on the team where fundraising is concerned, and the staffer we brought on to replace him was not successful. The Report is presently cashflow-positive but a few thousand dollars in the hole.

This year we went through a major shake-up which was the exit of Duncan Kinney, Progress Alberta's executive director before we moved to a cooperative model and one of the Report's key writers. (Don't worry, it was amicable! Duncan has a family now and just needed something more stable.)

We're proud that through our current project, the Progress Report, we've been able to provide work and bylines to talented journalists who have gone on to do great work in Alberta. Shout out to Jack Farrell for example.

By 2019 we found that operating as a comms shop was not the best way for us to help the movement. In response to threatened legislation from the UCP, labour in Alberta tuned up its in-house capacity and reduced its reliance on contractors. (Which is good!) So we got out of that game.

From 2016 to 2020, Progress Alberta provided communications and organizing help to many worthy organizations and causes on the left. We also conducted some important campaigns of our own, like our campaign against carding featuring Desmond Cole's speaking tour.

The Progress Report is a worker-controlled independent media collective that we founded in late 2019 with support from our parent organization, Progress Alberta.
