Everyone I’ve seen on the ground over the years, YOU did this! @xrnyc.bsky.social @greenfaith.bsky.social @nychange.bsky.social @climatedefiance.bsky.social @stopmoneypipeline.bsky.social @foodandwater.bsky.social @sunrisemvmt.bsky.social, so many more. When we come together, we move mountains.

So, so many good humans behind this shift, doing research, advocacy, mediating and witnessing where the decisions are made, undertaking non-violent civil disobedience to call attention to this issue, even disrupting the Comptroller from time to time. Direct action works.

This is not over. New Yorkers will continue to fight this regressive, immoral decision. As both a public health biologist who has provided testimony on this pipeline project and as a Hudson Valley resident, I remain on the side of the people. Follow @foodandwater.bsky.social to join us.

5) NYC does not need this gas. Countless expert testimonies showed that the gas is not needed. The metro area has not had a supply problem for several years, and our state as a whole is reducing our need for gas. Governor Hochul is bowing to the fossil fuel industry and private utilities.

4) Nobody in New York wants this. Hundreds of local electeds, thousands of New York citizens, and nine municipalities all registered their clear clear objections. Governor Hochul is doing the bidding of the gas industry, not listening to her constituents. www.nysenate.gov/newsroom/art...

Governor Hochul was elected to uphold and enact that law—not pretend it doesn’t exist and drag our beloved state back into let’s-go-fossil-fuels past a la Donald Trump. Shameful capitulation and abject failure of leadership, Governor.

3) It further entrenches fossil fuel dependency and swings a wrecking ball at our climate system at a time of terrible peril. NYS is supposed to be leading on climate. That’s why we banned fracking and in 2014 and passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act in 2019.

2) It’s menace to public safety. Doubling the pressure in this aging hunk-o-junk pipeline—constructed in an era when the name IROQUOIS was not yet viewed as cringey and racist—will markedly raise the threat of explosions, breaches, and other catastrophic accidents up and down the Hudson Valley.

The compressor station in Athens is located near an elementary school. It’s wrong to compel kids in disadvantaged communities to serve as the human sacrifices for a misbegotten fossil fuel project. Compressor stations emit more 30+ cancer-causing chemicals and are linked to increased asthma.

This is a wrong and terrible decision for five reasons. 1) It’s a public health menace. Doubling the amount of gas in the pipeline requires building new 24/7 compressor stations that will increase smog and hazardous air pollutants in two environmental justice communities: Athens and Dover, NY.
