A good line feels like 3.5 days. Maybe Thursday evening before a crash late Friday.

John F. Kennedy himself said: “If sometimes our great artists have been the most critical of our society, it is because their sensitivity and their concern for justice, which must motivate any true artist, makes him aware that our Nation falls short of its highest potential...

We have big trees in our lives. Some we love that shield us, some we resent that block our access to the sun we need. When those trees fall it is an opportunity for something new to grow. I find happiness in the belief that if we look in the right place we will find that beauty chases us everywhere.

Some wild violet enjoyed the new access to sun, and trees that had grown in the shadows of Wilbur’s tree seemed to embrace the opportunity as well.

As I kept visiting the site of Mr. Niewald last subject in Loose Park, I noticed something. When a big tree falls it provides an opportunity for new things to grow.

Things slanted towards bitterness more than I would like, but hey, that’s life. I am so lucky in so many other ways.

It’s probably not a secret, nor does it need to be, but I struggled with my father’s death. If I could neatly describe the feelings I had when he passed I’m sure it would have been easier whether those feelings were pure hatred or love.

Shortly after he passed the tree also did, and was soon cut down. It made me pretty sad at first and I made a point to continue to visit the site.

I remain committed to observing the natural world to learn more about myself and our existence. Something I was lucky enough to get to see was Wilbur Niewald painting at Loose Park as he ran through life’s finish line. His last painting was of a tree that was slowly drying up.

This painting is for my Uncle Jim, who I adore. It was my intention from the beginning to make the best painting I’ve made, until now, for him. I’ve really appreciated his support over the years. I was far too precious with it, and started it several times, but I am proud of the finished product.
