So wonderful to attend the launch of the @nestauk.bsky.social Challenge Works Longitude Prize to try to find a cure for ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease. If this works it will be the best use of £7.5m ever.

Irrespective of whether it is a good idea or not, it seems nuts that the Mayor of London can't even pedestrianise a street without permission from the Deputy Prime Minister. Let's make devolution substantive! @centreforcities.bsky.social www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I most certainly am suggesting something 100x bigger!! Thank you @williamcb.bsky.social

V good by @timleunig.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/timleuni...

Even now, the majority of parents do not claim their full free childcare allowance.

@gilesyb.bsky.social over 80% of HTB FTB said the scheme allowed then to buy a more expensive house than they would otherwise have been able to buy. Thanks @achnein

I think the evidence was that HTB mainly allowed FTB to buy bigger houses in better areas, rather than helping people who could not otherwise to buy.

Lots of tax rules have unfair consequences for particular individuals. The answer is to campaign to change the law. It would be quite wrong if courts could override Parliament. The law has always reflected that. So it’s no surprise the private school VAT challenge has failed.

@eddavey.libdems.org.uk has written a genuinely good book, and today it is just 99p on kindle. Lots of interesting things in it. www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Care-why...

Was the government right to extend free school meals to 500,000 more children? And if not, how could the money have been better spent? timleunig.substack.com/p/is-extendi...

Thanks Thames Water for telling me to fix any leaks. Same back at you

You think it is that simple, @markobroin.bsky.social ? Ha, more fool you!!! ;-) A chocolate nose would also make it VAT liable. Or chocolate hair. In fact the only chocolate it is allowed while remaining VAT exempt is eyes...

Seriously good stuff from @chrisgiles.ft.com

This further underlines the sense that no-one in Blue Labour has any intention of engaging the world as is or thinking through actual policy challenges. This is just vibes based rubbish dressed up as working class radicalism. Sound familiar? Yep, same as Reform.

I am glad never to have had to work for an Education Secretary who said such dangerous rubbish (obviously I would have resigned, if the PM of the day didn't force them to do so first!) Love my country.

Great opportunity for UK, Canada, Australia...

timleunig.substack.com/p/immigrant-... This week my substack tackles the issue of immigrant paedophiles, and sets out what the government's policy should be - and why. (£, free trial)

@janethughes.bsky.social is an inspired choice to lead civil service reform.

I never want to hear again, in my lifetime, that the GOP is concerned about meeting the challenge of rising China in global economic & geopolitical competition.

If the government actually means this, they will announce that they are fully and permanently funded the just announced teacher pay rise. Otherwise it is just spin, and @schoolsweek.bsky.social should call them out on it.

The PM has just caved in on winter fuel benefits. If you agree with this move, you can use our shiny new "Be the Chancellor" tool to work out how to pay for it. Remember, money doesn't grow on trees. www.nesta.org.uk/data-visuali... @theifs.bsky.social @helenmiller.bsky.social

I think most economists would lower the VAT threshold, so that large and small firms all compete on a level playing field, and the most productive grow.

Journalists - want to write something sensible about what might happen in the budget? Use the @nestauk.bsky.social & IFS "Be the Chancellor" tool and see what might be needed...

Paging Mel Stride and the Tory team - and all other opposition parties. Want to produce a credible alternative to Rachel Reeves' plans? Use the @nestauk.bsky.social & IFS "Be the Chancellor" tool and see if your numbers add up...

Are you a back bench Labour MP? Think you could do better than Rachel Reeves? Use the @nestauk.bsky.social IFS "Be the Chancellor" tool and see if your numbers add up...

Since everyone I talk to seems to think most new housing should be "affordable," it follows that everyone should read this timleunig.substack.com/p/building-n... by @timleunig.bsky.social

This is good by @timleunig.bsky.social. An odd choice IMV that commercial buildings have to have the same level of 'right to light' as residential ones...while not being built to a standard that you can convert them to residential buildings easily.

The 1997 Labour government cared a lot about education, and delivered on its commitment. The current government should take heed. Me in @FT today - on.ft.com/3EZ6QDH

Encouraging stuff. It's going to be bumpy and bad actors are going to jump on it but winning the political argument for doing the only sensible thing - having fewer people in prison while making them more effective places - is doable but not easy.

A huge, quiet success: violence has fallen 75% in a generation:

I was intrigued to read this because Bowling Alone barely mentions immigration and largely does so in reference to the late 19th century experience in the US. The index sections on neighbours, education, and religion are much longer. Perhaps Labour insiders are reading a different Bowling Alone?

Will the UK serve BigMacs at the state visit? If the government wants to get in the President's good books, maybe we should...

In which @stephenkb discussed immigration and describes my substack as "impeccable". Will be asking for a job with @FT soon! www.ft.com/content/305a... & timleunig.substack.com/p/internatio...

Regional and local economies: propped up by the local university. As has been true for many years - HOW can successive sets of ministers not grasp this basic fact - never mind making levelling up a reality, we're in danger of flippin' levelling down if the penny doesn't drop @timleunig.bsky.social

This week I have another idea to save the government money - timleunig.substack.com/p/national-i... - £/free trial

For VE Day, my contribution (with others) from VE75 cepr.org/publications... discusses the origins and lessons of the war, the exploitation of occupied Europe, the operation of economic warfare, the role of Britain's allies, recovery from the war, and the long-term damage to trust and cohesion

You didn't vote for Brexit, but you are voting for Independence, another raising of trade barriers which will make Brexit look like a picnic.

I also wonder whether the fall in Tesla sales is because they are replacing the Y with the improved Y. There was limited availability, and limited demand because why not wait for the improved model, with a longer range, more features and available at the same price?

This isn't getting enough attention: policyskeptic.blogspot.com/2025/05/a-wa... ...

Completely agree: Catholics 1, Anglicans 0.

There is a limit to how much you can say in 600 words!

The resignation of the National Statistician is indeed big news

I urge you to read the full report, which discusses these issues
