Should humanity exist? Let’s ask a man who cofounded an online payment-processing platform 27 years ago

I do not think normalizing politicians suing media outlets is a good thing.

This week on @wired.com's Uncanny Valley podcast I interviewed Sahil Lavingia, a former DOGE member who we first identified in April. He's one of the only ways we've been able to gain any insight into the secretive organization. Some things he revealed: www.wired.com/podcast/unca...

NEW: In practice, no one is in charge of the Copyright Office right now for absurd reasons. Are copyrights now being issued valid? Great question that will buy many lawyers yachts! This is by @knibbs.bsky.social

Realtors in Philadelphia are also eager to tell you that you have to buy property in Philadelphia NOW before the flood of rich refugees and anti-communist dissidents sweeps in from New York.

BALLS IN: Edward "Big Balls" Coristine is back in the government as a special government employee at the Social Security Administration; was observed looking "nervous, almost embarrassed" in the cafeteria this week. From @makenakelly.bsky.social, @jakelahut.writes.news, and @telliotter.bsky.social

Food deserts exist because private actors don't see opportunities for profit in them; one of the literal purposes of government in a mixed economy is to correct for the failures of the market to do things like provide accessible, affordable food.

NEW: Records of 911 and EMS responses to calls from ICE detention centers show a surge in emergencies the facilities are unequipped to handle, including suicide attempts, severe pregnancy complications, and alleged sexual assaults by staff. This is by @dmehro.bsky.social and @dell.bsky.social

This was a fun exercise even if there are only five I’m sure would be on this list if I made it again

Huge news today: Big Balls Out. Also, Big Balls Out.

NEW: Big Balls' employment with the US government has been compromised to a permanent end. This is from @jakelahut.writes.news, @makenakelly.bsky.social, @telliotter.bsky.social, and @zoeschiffer.bsky.social

I have absolutely no opinions on the New York mayoral race but strongly believe we need more politicians who have been observed being enraptured by Kenny Omega.

WHAT'S THIS? Musk doesn't have a laptop (but has posted about his laptop numerous times in the past year)!! Well let @wired.com come to the rescue Elon!! Here's our pick of the best laptops, sir! You're welcome www.wired.com/gallery/best...

It’s so humid the air hydrated my kombu.

elon musk’s lawyers: elon does not use computers elon musk in december during a diablo stream: “this is a pic of my laptop”

God grant me the confidence of UB40’s singer stepping into the recording studio and saying, “Yes, I would like millions of people all over the world to compare my singing to Al Green’s.”

Reminder that disinformation from all sides will, historically, be rampant in a moment like this. Be careful what you repost.

I’ve got nothing!

Broke: City of Philadelphia allowing drivers to illegally and dangerously park their cars in the median of South Broad Street Woke: Open street and picnic tables

Tidal pushed a Dutch guy’s electro remix of “Copperhead Road” at me and I have more questions than I would ever have time to ask about why this exists.

I've lived in Los Angeles for seven years. The only times I've ever heard it this eerily, horribly quiet are in the very first days of Covid. Here's a bit of what it's like right now, in a city where so many people are rightfully afraid to go outside: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

“Cuomo’s whole concept of leadership is rooted in manipulation, braying meanness, the belief that he should never have to face consequences; it’s the accrual of power built not on accomplishment or innate talent, but on the diminishment, disrespect and objectification of others.”

Summer has arrived in Philadelphia (on the right is a menu for a Manna Bakery pop-up)

“Although Midjourney seems to have blocked some Disney and Universal-related prompts for videos, WIRED could sometimes circumvent the potential guardrails during tests by using spelling variations or repeating the prompt.”

Day by passing day, we are watching what amounts to a national police riot by ICE. But what worries me is that what we are witnessing is not the actions of an agency that believes it will ever be subject to meaningful oversight or legal authority ever again. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/ice-believ...

The final installment of @wired.com's How to Win a Fight package is also my favorite. It's a zine we made full of tips: How to protest safely and protect yourself from gov surveillance, how to out-troll trolls. Make one for yourself, make some for friends. www.wired.com/story/downlo...

We live in a world where the Pope takes part in a White Sox chant at the Vatican

The best way I can sum up Gristede's is, the one and only time I went to buy meat at one, I saw a woman poking a hole in each plastic-wrapped chicken container, sniffing it, and putting it back. When she saw me looking, she turned to me, shrugged, and said, "I just can't keep returning rotten meat."
