At least five women have died as a result of abortion bans since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Ukraine and its allies are very close to the moment when Russia can be forced to end or at least halt the war, but this would require the United States to impose tough sanctions on Russia. www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/202...

Be safe tonight LA friends. Stay peaceful and don’t take the bait. #iceprotests #losangeles

“Trump deploying the national guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos… not about public safety, it’s about stoking fear.”

There are 512 days until the Midterms, 1247 days until the next theoretical Presidential Election, and 1321 days until the next optional Inauguration Day. Midterms progress: ██▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 21% Presidency/Regime progress: █▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 10% Until Next Inauguration : ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 9%

This illegal, heavy-handed, and unnecessary crackdown on peaceful protesters is a trumped-up excuse to manufacture a spectacle and stoke further tensions. www.aft.org/press-releas...

Like clockwork, Fox is now pushing insinuations of "paid protesters" in LA

I just love LA so goddamn hard rn

This reads like the kind of letter you send before filing litigation.

You know when things were pretty quiet and peaceful in L.A.? Before ICE started arresting residents who were bothering no one and going to their jobs. And before DHS and National Guard troops showed up and made the situation worse. Of course Trump and Stephen Miller want the situation to get worse.

Governor Newsom: "I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops ... and return them to my command. ... This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed." The letter:

In the last 20 or so minutes I’ve seen LAPD officers shove women to the ground without provocation, rip a sign out of a man’s hand and then swing a baton into his leg and raise a less-lethal launcher to aim directly at a protester (which I’m 99% is a major policy violation.)

My statement on what's unfolding in Los Angeles.

“Today’s civil unrest risks expanding into the sort of violence that kills lots of people and strains civic bonds for decades,” writes Conor Friedersdorf. “Stepping back from the brink is in America’s interest, regardless of where one attributes blame”:

No one should be using the term "less lethal" when referring to the missiles and projectiles shot at protesters unless you are content doing PR for cops.

One argument I tried to make to centrist, right-leaning folks during 2024 was that if you really hate street protest and unrest and chaos, then you should absolutely not vote for Donald Trump, because he 100% guarantees more.

I notice people calling what we’re seeing these last couple of days “riots.” I was here during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. That’s not what this is. Local police can handle this, but ICE needs to back off—especially with these amateur hires who don’t know what the f*ck they’re doing.

I just published another new Bluesky feed, this one focused on Outsider Art and Street Art. Check it out. Created with #Surfapp. #Surffeeds Outsider & Folk Art bsky.app/profile/did:...

“Salvation Mountain is a literal man-made mountain 28 years in the making, covered in half a million gallons of latex paint. What started as a small monument made of dirt and painted cement became, over time, a sprawling adobe and hay-bale mountain complex…” Aaron Huey / National Geographic, 2014

The definitive book on Outsider art. Text by Roger Cardinal includes essays on cultural conditioning, madness and art, Dubuffet and Art Brut, authenticity and originality, along with individuals such as Adolf Wölfli, Simon Rodia, Guillaume, Joseph Crépin, and Madge Gill.

The least surprising result

Old enough to remember when MAGAville was furious that the government was trying to pressure private companies. This is pure jawboning/chilling effects trying to create a "cost" for advertisers choosing not to advertise on X.

@braedon.dev How is well-known dev going? We still use it often at work! ✊

Critically important point from Juliette. The only real justification for federalizing the nat guard over a governors objection is when the civil authorities are defying the law. This is attack on the sovereign right of the people of California to self government.

Earlier this evening, the Univision crew grabbed their gear and started running when federal police began shooting pepper balls at us. @lataco.bsky.social

We could have had her, America.

The military isn’t being employed to carry out an immigration policy. The immigration policy, and especially the way the administration is choosing to carry it out, is an excuse to call out the military.

“A 2010 study that analyzed 40 years of protest coverage in five major newspapers, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, found that the papers depicted protests — even peaceful ones — as nuisances rather than as necessary functions of democracy.”

Less than 45 minutes after President Donald Trump thanked the National Guard "for a job well done!" Mayor Karen Bass clarified on social media "the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles."

“Just to be clear, the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles.” -- LA Mayor Karen Bass The @us.theguardian.com is spot on with this fact checking in the story & headline. Other news outlets should follow this lead: www.theguardian.com/us-news/live...

What’s happening in LA is an a good reminder of how ever more fragmented our information landscape has become On Bluesky it’s almost entirely about executive overreach; on X it’s “LA is burning; deport them all”

I am always saying this: Equalioy hurts no one

States rights touting Republicans are awfully quiet right now. #losangeles

I went to X to check for up-to-date stuff on LA and the National Guard but got Chamath posting about his 🍆 and Elon-Trump fight memes so I guess refreshing NYT it is....
