Agreed

My kids have been developing their music tastes in interesting directions. I was listening one of their playlists and one daughter has an eclectic list of classics, Queen, Bowie, etc, and also a ton of Florence + the Machine which I’d never heard much of before and is now in my rotation.

So I finished listening to Emily Tesh's THE INCANDESCENT, and WOW it hits if you're someone who works with kiddos. 😅 I've longed for someone to do "magical school but from the teacher's perspective", and... Well, it sure shows that the author is also a teacher, and I mean that in the best way.

It's a thoughtful review of what sounds like an interesting book!

New Nisi publication: Set in the near future, “Slippernet” is a sequel to both Everfair and Kinning. The title is a reference to “sneakernet,” the term early Microsoft employees used when talking about moving stuff around by getting up and walking it from desk to desk. reactormag.com/slippernet-n...

Drove out a bit to meet @ccfinlay.bsky.social for a coffee shop co-writing session and lunch together. After a semester of feeling not much like a writer, talking shop with a fellow scribbler was much needed. And I wrote a few pages that I like. Great afternoon.

I have no idea why my name is attached to this article, I have no recollection of ever writing it or being asked to write something for Reactor anytime lately. Anyone at Reactor able to double check what happened? Maybe the real author of this review has a name close to mine?

I do think we need to talk about education and how we've made it many things, but notably a social prestige and a gatekeeping entity for jobs. Kids aren't all here to learn. They're not quite here to learn, they're here to jump through the hoops necessary. So obv the temptation is here

Been dealing with this as an English prof as well. It is incredibly dispiriting.

THIS IS OUR LAST PUSH! We have 1 day to reach our fundraising goal & we have a ways to go!! Be the reason that the Locus lights stay on! Help us out at igg.me/at/locusmag2025. We are so grateful for your support! Fundraiser link in bio #sff #scifi #fantasy #booksky

I see soooooooo many great writers putting so much of their time, effort, skill and money squarely in the lap of a really evil and untrustworthy company. Morality questions aside: is it worth planting seeds in THIS soil, in this moment? Does it seem likely to pay off? So many alternatives!

It seems to me that governments/AI companies will need to set up a system similar to the last time this was faced, the Public Lending Payments system: publiclendingright.ca/about/news/c... (A portion of profits goes into a pool to be royalties for authors)

Step 1: Person writes a bad article Step 2: You share the article to trash it Step 3: Person gets clicks from your share Step 4: Person writes more like that for clicks It's easy to not be in the above chain. Share smart takes from smart people. I can get mad on my own.

Love this series! One of my new favorites!

Sharing a lovely, positive review (bec the book drops on June 10). I’ll highlight this great phrase since it’s relevant in a stressful time: “Reading it felt like relief.” Yes, it’s set in a grim world, but much of the story focuses on supportive relationships & competent people doing their job.
