They always struggle with San Diego. It’s been a tough go this season so far. My theory? They miss Ueck.

Yes they are the worst! We feel blessed that there are only a few in Futa and, generally, only for about 10 days just before or after New Year’s. This is one of the reasons we often spend Christmas to New Year’s in Viña/ Valpo with Pilar’s family. No tabanos!

Not really. We get a few, but not as bad as the Lake District. Also fewer tabanos (horseflies)

Altitude is not as high as you think! Futaleufú is actually the lowest of the 40+ official border crossings between Chile & Argentina. The nearest ski resort is La Hoya, a 75-minute drive in Esquel, Argentina. But there are other lovely ski areas in El Bolsón, Bariloche, and Villa la Angostura.

It a Hugo Marin. One of Chile’s most important painters of the last 100 years. He passed away in 2018

It’s kind if like New Yorker cartoons. I take the pics (mostly) and then, we have a committee that submits captions for the pics 😂😂😂

There has always been 3-5% of Chileans who adore the city—artists, writers, intellectuals, cultural entrepreneurs, etc. Others, sadly, see the city as a poor place to avoid on the way to wealthier Viña del Mar. Too many see Valpo through the prism of their politics, prejudice, or ideology. It’s sad.

The unique urban landscape of Valparaiso—a UNESCO heritage site with 42 hills & hundreds of stairways & alleys—requires extraordinary investment from the Chilean government to maintain. No city hall can administer adequately. Until Chile realizes this, negative stereotypes about Valpo will persist

Saludos

5 were always municipal. The other 10, which had been private, were purchased by the Chilean Government in 2013. 12 years later, only 5 have been restored. This is an absolute failure of the Chilean government towards Valpo. All 3 political coalitions—left, right & center—are equally guilty. 😡😡

I love them all. Florida, which is still awaiting reparations, is unique. Lecheros, which is years away from coming back on line, is so cool. What I love about Reina Victoria is the way the funicular is inserted in the cultural & urban landscape. This should be the goal for all of them.

Somos dos. Es mi ciudad musa, lejos la mas bonita y interesante de Chile.

Sadly, mostly private planes and occasional charters. There has been eternal discussion of the 2 airlines having scheduled flights, which we would love, but to be economically feasible the government would need to extend the “residents subsidy” to Futa flights and they have been hesitant to do so.

There are 2 airlines that run the route: Aerocord & Pewen. Planes range from 21 seats to 9 seats. There are a minimum of 6 flights a day, but there can be as many as 12 in summer. The flight is gorgeous and the planes fly low so there is no turbulence. As a Patagonian resident, we pay half price 😀

2 hour drive from farm to Chaiten. 35 minute commuter flight from Chaiten to Puerto Montt (Aeródromo La Paloma), taxi to Tepual Intl Airport in Puerto Montt, 1:45 commercial flight from Puerto Montt to Santiago, 75 minute drive to Valpo. 9 hours door to door.
