If we go by WAR, 3 of the 6 starters carrying the Red Sox this year all play in the outfield. Their top sub (Refsnyder) is the 4th outfielder. Bumping any of them in favor of Roman Anthony probably doesn't help the team now. And there's clearly no room for him at DH. But there is at 1B. (1/3)

I think it's time to see my favorite prospect, Kristian Campbell, sent down to AAA, but I didn't come to this conclusion based only on his struggles at the plate, which is what some writers seem to focus on. (1/4) www.bostonglobe.com/2025/06/03/s...

If instead of just looking at 1-run games you look at games that either go to extra innings or are decided by 1 run in the first 9 innings, the Boston Red Sox have a record of 6 wins and 17 losses in such close games. That means in most of their 33 losses they were trailing by 1 or 0 runs after 9.

From May 21 to May 28 the Boston #RedSox scored the same number of runs as they allowed (36 of each). Their record was 2 wins and 6 losses in those games.

The Red Sox bullpen saved itself tonight, especially the last 3 to pitch. At risk of becoming overworked when the starter was ejected in the third inning, Weissert, Slaten, and Chapman combined to pitch 3 and 1/3 innings on an absurdly low 24 pitches. On average that many innings takes 55 pitches.

Something's clearly gone wrong lately in Kristian Campbell's big league journey. User @redsoxstats on X shows that at the same time, pitchers have stopped throwing Campbell fastballs when he is ahead in the count. Perhaps that is it?

Red Sox: we know you haven't really played at first base before, but would you be willing to give it a try, ... ... Romy? Gonzalez: Sure! ... Abraham? Toro: Sure! ... Nick? Sogard: Sure! ... Raffy?

The Red Sox need to do something about first base, and maybe also shortstop. I think that starts with giving Roman Anthony AAA reps at first base, starting now. Here's why. baseballsphere.com/2025/05/16/h...

When a late Red Sox lead is blown and fans criticize the pitcher, there often comes pushback where it is shown that the reliever's overall stats are good. But that pushback doesn't work against these stats. This is proof that this bullpen needs improvement. They must hold leads when it matters most.

The Red Sox have a new team frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. bWAR = WAR on www.Baseball-Reference.com fWAR = WAR on www.Fangraphs.com

I was just asked, "When is the Fourth of July?" I replied, "It's on the fourth day of July." My 5-year-old daughter then just moved on to the next topic as if nothing had happened.

Easy to overlook in the Red Sox pummeling by the Tigers yesterday is Sean Newcomb coming in in the third inning, throwing 98 pitches and completing the game. He wasn't stellar, but he got the outs recorded and prevented all his fellow relievers from having to waste their arms on a lost game. Thanks!

Connor Wong's evolution: In 2023, an average defensive catcher with a below-average bat (78 wRC+). 2024, 2nd worst defensive C in MLB, above-average bat (110 wRC+). 2025, above average def, awful bat (13 wRC+). None of these very different versions of Wong match what Narvaez has been thus far.

I'm guessing Rafael Devers must have said something like this to Red Sox management a couple of days ago: "I'll make a deal with you. You stop asking me to play first base, and I'll stop making outs." 6 for 7 with 2 walks these last 2 games.

When I saw that both Juan Soto and Wilyer Abreu had multi-homer games last night, I was reminded of this post I made last December. I thought it worth seeing how this prediction was going so far, now that we're nearly a quarter of the way through the season. Thread begins (1/6).

Red Sox offense in 8-game chunks, updated, part 4 of 4. Casas was starting to emerge from his early-season slump, but never approached expectations, before his season-ending injury. Rafaela was showing better plate discipline and results for a bit, but has fallen back to bad habits.

Red Sox offense in 8-game chunks, updated, part 3 of 4. Both Wilyer Abreu and Kristian Campbell started the season SCORCHING hot, then cooled off, but kept getting on base the whole time. Abreu is making a slight comeback now, while Campbell is making a stronger one. Youth bolstering the lineup.

Red Sox offense in 8-game chunks, updated, part 2 of 4. Bregman's bat has been the only one on the team to stay consistently above average all year. He's earning his contract. Story started out well, got hot in mid-April, then went stone cold in late April. I'm curious what happened there.

Red Sox offense in 8-game chunks, updated, now in 4 parts. Also, rate stats that are better than MLB averages are in green. Duran has started hitting lasers all over the field, and it's been fun to watch. Devers has continued hitting and drawing walks, and has added some pop.

One of grants frozen at Cornell: $6.7M (4 yrs) to develop heart pumps for babies born w/ heart defects. It took decades of work to get to point of prepping device for in-human clinical trials. No private company could do this. The cruelty of the Trump administration is heartbreaking. So to speak.

I wonder how many Americans realize that Bribery is one of just two impeachable offenses specifically enumerated in the United States Constitution and the case that Donald Trump has now committed that crime dozens of times in his second term is a legal slam dunk. So shall we get started?

Duran Duran.

If the Red Sox can get Rafael Devers to take the first base position, that opens them up to adding ANYBODY to their roster - for example, you can now play four outfielders every day, rotating them through the DH position every fourth day. Outfielders like ... yes, of course, Roman Anthony!

Bregman and Story have been carrying the Red Sox offense for a little while now, but yesterday they each reached base once in five opportunities, while 6 of their teammates reached multiple times. At last, the rest of the team is clicking!

I like the nickname "Captain Chaos" for Jarren Duran. #RedSox

SAVE Act just passed House. It is modern-day poll tax that would disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans, end online, mail + voter registration drives & require voters to register in person at election offices, forcing some rural voters to drive 8 hours to register. Total disaster in every way

Catcher Carlos Narváez is in the top 10 in MLB in defensive WAR (according to Baseball-Reference) despite playing in fewer than 2/3 of the Red Sox defensive innings.

So good to see the New England Patriots prioritize their offensive line in the draft. A weak OL brings down your entire offense, both the passing and running games, and the Patriots' OL has been a weakness for a few years now.
