Since 2023 no batting position has had as low an RBI per PA as the 9 spot. The fact that he leads in a cumulative stat at MLB's least competitive spot is a strong indicator that they play him there too much. And in his career he's gotten RBIs at a much higher rate when batting in the 7 spot.

Because in the two games immediately preceding my post, he hit in the 7th spot, and went 4-for-10 with a double, 2 HR and 4 RBI. Sure, in the last few games he's done well in the 9 spot after struggling there much of the season. But if anything he got even hotter in the 7 spot.

But to date, all his game action has been in the outfield. The Red Sox really should change this, right away. (3/3)

All this time the Red Sox were training Kristian Campbell at first base, they should have been training Anthony there, and getting him AAA game action there. Barring a major injury to a Sox starting outfielder, it's Anthony's only path to the majors this year. (2/3)

If the send Campbell down for now, and bring up Vaughn Grissom, they'll have a league-average bat with seasoned fielding and baserunning. That would be an upgrade over what Campbell has been giving for the last several weeks. (4/4)

He's a guy that looked ready for the majors at the end of spring training, and in the first weeks of the season. But now we can see he clearly isn't quite there yet. Given all their razor-thin losses, carrying Campbell has probably cost the Red Sox several games in the standings. (3/4)

There have been blunders on the field and there have been blunders on the basepaths. Last night against the Angels he had one of each, and each cost the Red Sox a run in a game that went to extra innings. The Red Sox win the game if he avoids just one of those blunders. He's just too raw. (2/4)

Fun to watch him play. Not fun to see all these close losses. :( I think Duran means more to this team than just the stats he contributes. He brings energy. He sets an attitude. He's a true leadoff hitter. Yeah they've got other outfielders, but they don't have another leadoff guy and tonesetter.

A wonderful list, but the one thing I had hoped for and didn't get was for Biden to work with Congress to curtail the power of the presidency. I feel like that was the most important one of all, and that we're paying the price now that it wasn't done.

Devers: What is your problem? You think you can move me to any position? This looks very bad on your behalf. I am upset you even asked! ... uuuuuh ... Kristian? Campbell: Sure!

OMG I thought this was a real headline! Before I noticed it was from one of my favorite news sources.

Carlos Narváez has been an elite defensive catcher with a league-average (103 wRC+) bat thus far in 2025. And he's looking like he can keep it up. Wong worked on his defense in the offseason, and it shows. But he's gotta find his bat again if he wants to split time with Narváez.

(6/6) I'll take the 6 WAR improvement for $27M over the 0 WAR improvement for $50M every time.

(5/6) By not signing Soto, the Red Sox are getting about the same outfield production for $50M less in this year alone. By signing Crochet, they're getting a huge improvement in their pitching rotation for not nearly as much money spent, and for Fried it would have been about $27M more spent.

(4/6) Abreu has actually outplayed Soto so far, and although that may not continue, the best assumption right now appears to be that they'll finish the year close in total WAR. So if anything, my claim appears to have been a bit conservative.

(3/6) That projects to about 5 to 7 additional WAR over the course of the year for having signed one of those guys (Crochet who they did sign; Fried who I implored them to sign).

(2/6) Sean Newcomb and Hunter Dobbins have been filling in for injured starters, and give us an idea of the kind of production that Crochet will be replacing for the rest of the year, and that Max Fried would have replaced. Crochet has been good for 1.4 WAR more, and Fried 1.8 WAR more.

Yes. And they need to make sure the tabulators are not hacked this time. Or at least call for hand recounts everywhere. youtube.com/shorts/yPpB2...

Some fans are getting kind of shrieky about bringing up Anthony ASAP, but they don't have good insights about who should be removed to make room. (And nobody even talks about the mess that'll happen if/when Yoshida comes back.) Thank you for your more balanced treatment of the matter.

Oh wow. I'd forgotten - I worked in downtown Denver at the time. I ran into Kielty's parents who were strolling along the pedestrian mall, I can't remember if it was just before or after game 4. We talked about the WS. They were very nice folks. Thanks for the reminder!
