Air raid sirens were wailing in faraway Orenburg region this morning, in Yasny, near to an underground missile launch site.
This is near the Kazakhstan border, about 1,700km from Ukraine.
Soon smoke seemed to be rising.

Zelenskyy received some (I think unjustified) criticism for staying at the G7 and not returning to Ukraine after the massive attack on Kyiv.
But as soon as he arrived home, Ukraine's President went to view the scene of the attacks & paid his respects.

Wednesday saw the death toll in Kyiv rise throughout the day, ending at double the number it started at. Then later Putin cynically told journalists they only hit military targets.

At the meeting with journalists, Putin again denied hitting tower blocks in Kyiv, which the world has seen, killed 28 people.
The war criminal said:
"The strike was not on residential areas, but on the defence-industrial complex: on factories that produce military equipment."

Ukraine saw for the first time, a Russian drone with a camera, AI and direct radio control from Russia.
The drone is equipped with a radio modem, so it can be controlled from 150km away, and if air repeaters are used, the range can be much greater.

Reports of a fire and explosions - in that order it seems, in the militarised town of Rylsk.
Ukraine has successfully attacked the town in Kursk region many times in the past month, but this may be "an accident."

Toda's Day of Mourning in Kyiv is marked by the the US Embassy in Kyiv. However I can't help but feel rage with the final sentence.
Trump's cosy phone chats with Putin have spectacularly failed. Yet, the war criminal is still not being punished for murdering civilians.

Yesterday was such a long and crazy day, but thankfully much quieter night, and yes I got some sleep!
A very big and long thread yesterday, but you didn't have to read it all in one go, so here's the link to catch up:

"I’d also argue that there is some political opportunism at play.
As we approach the fall municipal election, be on the lookout for an increase in “public safety” rhetoric among city council and mayoral candidates aiming to tap into our anxieties" seeking our vote.

Feel bad for all the fishies that have to deal with that orc crude. But like Brad said, riding very high, so hopefully mainly empty!

Zelenskyy told G7 leaders that Russia's only change since the change of US president is that last year it was unusual if there were 100 drones fired in a night. Now it's unusual if there are fewer.
"This proves those who support new and stronger sanctions against Russia are absolutely right"

Thanks to @larswienand.bsky.social for supporting today's thread with a 'KoFi'
It takes countless hours checking, editing, researching & loss of sleep.
Obviously these are very busy & tough days and I hope soon to be able to credit all those who tipped last week whom I haven't yet managed to💙💛

Canada is backing Ukraine..
PM Mark Carney, meeting Zelenskyy in Alberta today, pledged another 🇨🇦$2bn (US$1.5bn) of military aid.
He also imposed new sanctions against a number of Russians, entities and more than 200 “shadow fleet” vessels.
