Two days remain to comment on the US FWS and NMFS rule change that undermines the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This proposal rescinds the definition of “harm,” limiting protections to actions that directly injure or kill listed species, leaving their habitats vulnerable. Please submit comments! 🧪

NYT: “.. People making between about $51,000 and $17,000 could lose about $700 on average in after-tax income .. “By contrast, the top 0.1 percent, including those with incomes over $4.3 million, would gain on average more than $389,000 ..” @tonyromm.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/u...

The House will now take next step on reconciliation + Medicaid cuts at 1am Weds. Yes you read that right. Many of the (growing) cuts target the ACA adult expansion group. ICYMI a new rigorous study finds that expansion has saved lives literally; 21% ⬇️ in mortality www.nber.org/papers/w33719

I know people are tired, but everybody needs to call their congressional reps (of any party) and ask them to vote no on the "big beautiful bill."

"Waste" is when people get Medicaid. "Efficiency" is when you let 60,000 tons of food that's already been paid for rot instead of feeding someone with it.

Trump's cuts to the National Weather Service will make hurricanes and tornadoes harder to predict, endangering countless lives & livelihoods. But NOAA does much more than that. Yesterday was Endangered Species Day— Today, we’re fighting for their future. The bad news is Trump’s budget threatens extinction. The good news is we can take action together to fight back. ➡️ (1/8)

Trump fired over 1,000 National Park staff in February, and most still haven’t been reinstated. The $45 million he’s wasting on a military parade for his birthday could have paid their salaries for over a year.

The American public is broadly supportive of maintaining federal science and medical research funding, and against punishing universities by taking their funding away, according to a new poll:

“The entire landscape of American science, research, and engineering are under heavy attack,” the employee says. “It’s really critical that we all speak against it and be unified in our opposition.”

🧪 The NSF grant terminations hit women, racial & ethnic minorities, and those with disabilities the hardest. E.g.: --Female PIs were 58% of canceled grants (but 34% of all active grants) --Black PIs were 17% of canceled grants (but 4% as base rate) A closer look shows this is structural... 🧵

“The lived experience of a scientist right now is terrifying” My colleague Warren Cornwall spoke to @gregggonsalves.bsky.social, @rebekahtromble.bsky.social, @katestarbird.bsky.social and others about “the fear and self-censorship coursing through the nation’s scientific establishment today”. 🧪

Thanks to everybody who chimed in! I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist. So, I made it myself! Here's a simple illustration of how to control for confounding in interactions:>

NSF update. www.nsf.gov/edu

In 2024, Biden signed into law a $105 billion measure designed to end a shortfall in air traffic controllers. In 2025, Trump came in and instead began firing hundreds of them. So you can see how *clear* it is that Biden is to blame for the shortage now.

NSF programs are critical to US prosperity. NIH mostly biomedical. NSF spans *all* physical and social sciences. Fighting the attacks: Democracy Forward, Public Citizen, Protect Democracy links: democracyforward.org/action/donate/ www.citizen.org/article/publ... protectdemocracy.org/donate/

On April 9th, the Trump regime signed EO 14270, blandly titled “Zero-based regulatory budgeting to unleash American energy.” Behind that bureaucratic name is a sweeping directive: Dismantle a century of environmental protections.

I’m still baffled at how America took one of the basic principles of the presidency — the occupant shouldn’t be able to benefit financially from the office — and just said, nah, that just doesn’t count for this one guy.

it's going to take DECADES for science and research in the USA to recover from this shitshow of an administration and their lack of forethought in anything related to science research and funding. Legitimately at least one lost science generation, probably multiple lost science generations.

For Mother’s Day I talked to moms who are being put through hell because of the new administration’s policies. “I am aware of Project 2025 and their goals of getting women out of the workforce, and this really feels like part of it.” Read here:

So happy to share our Review paper A well-connected Earth: The science and conservation of organismal movement @science.org www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Letter: I use funding from the NSF for my research at the University of Utah. Trump’s deep budget cuts would devastate science.

“The money the Post Office spent came from us already. It is used to provide an insanely valuable service to us. And we could say that about any number of other things that provide massive value that we already paid for: libraries, schools, parks, fire departments, roads.”

The median number of Measles deaths among children in the US for the last 50 years has been 0. That's the benchmark. ANY more is a failure of policy. Bobby is currently a failed Secretary. You cannot yadda-yadda the life of a child that should not die.

🧪 Data update on NSF grant terminations Including last Friday's terminations, STEM education grants now account for... 54% of terminated NSF grants (751 of 1381) 75% of terminated NSF funding ($590M of $783M) The next generation of scientists is being targeted. #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF

Now they are gutting NSF. This is radical destruction. The Trump goal is to end scientific research in America. Our sense is that few people, even inside the government, have actually grappled with this reality.

Here are the NSF funding data by state. Click on your state, peruse data, and then click on the Fact Sheet at the top to see annual spending. Then, please call your congressional reps. NSF money creates stable jobs for people at all career stages. tableau.external.nsf.gov/views/NSFbyN...

On NSF Grant Terminations- even if your termination letter says that you cannot appeal, there is a legal basis for you to appeal within 30 days in PPAPG www.nsf.gov/policies/pap... and in Uniform Guidance 200.340 www.ecfr.gov/current/titl.... Appeal and send a message!

THE NSB (NSF Board) announced the existence and exploration of a pilot program to privatize the GRFP graduate fellowship (my wording). This includes branding opportunities for the companies sponsoring fellowships. This is short sighted and self-destructive, and threatens the mission of the NSF. 1/

US environmental agency halts funding for its main science division www.nature.com/articles/d41...

They are dismantling our entire research apparatus, piece by piece. Make sure everybody knows what they are doing. Call your reps whatever color your district is and demand more action.

LISTEN TO ME. *NOW* IS THE TIME TO CALL YOUR REP AND SENATORS. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO, OR WHERE IN THE US YOU LIVE. I'M HERE BEGGING YOU. #SaveNSF Here are your talking points: democrats-science.house.gov/imo/media/do...

SaveNSF is a coalition of concerned scientists and allies who are working to save funding for scientific grants through the NSF. The mission is to support and advocate for the continuation of vital research and innovation. Join: www.savensf.com

OMFG. If there's any agency that is NOT top-heavy, it's NSF. Over 95% of the money flowing through NSF goes to awards.

I haven't heard any Congresspeople talk about the fact that federally funded basic (NSF) and health (NIH) science in the US has been effectively ended. Every few days, our situation here gets qualitatively worse.

New AP poll on Trump/higher education: Maintain fed'l funding for scientific/medical research? 62% approve Remove colleges' tax-exempt status? 30% approve Withhold fed'l funds unless they comply w/ Trump's demands? 27% approve Overall on Trump/colleges? 56%👎, 42%👍 apnorc.org/projects/few...

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

Deciphering the Trump Administration’s Latest Letter to @harvard.edu In a scathing missive, McMahon called the university a “mockery” and vowed to cut off all federal grant funding. We asked some of our sources to weigh in on what it means. #HigherEd #EDUSky #AcademicSky bit.ly/4jE1vR2

“This is a really hard time for anyone who wants to do research, but particularly for people who are starting out,” Dr. Sussman said. “It is very disheartening to see the wheels of science kind of grinding to a halt.” #TRUMPCUTSKILL

The Trump administration has proposed “reinterpreting” which wetlands & streams are protected under the Clean Water Act. Last week I testified to EPA & urged the agency to preserve protections for these waters—and now you can too. Here’s how to weigh in & why it matters: blog.ucs.org/stacy-woods/...
