It's ok to not have a guaranteed relationship if the story's concept isn't romance and it's just an element being featured. But if the concept is about the sexual/romantic connection of the characters, the HEA/HFN needs to be there.
comment in response to

Yes, it's a genre convention. At the least, there should be a happy for now (HFN) ending where the love interests aren't officially in a relationship or marriage yet but they're still interested in being together.

I multitask while listening to audiobooks. For some reason, I only think to listen while physically reading along if it's a live oration like how it was in school. But it's technically the same, whether the speaking is a recording or live reciting. Idk why I never do it, lol.

At the library, I typically go off of word-of-mouth by hearing or seeing other ppl mention particular books! I'd say that's my primary impulse. And then everything else is secondary.

Oh, I meant books I've read already! When I go to the bookstore for new things to read, I'll typically loan a copy from the library if it caught my eye, based on the criteria I said before. Then if it becomes a favorite, I go and actually buy my own physical copy!
comment in response to
post
I also only buy physical copies if the book is a favorite, so that's the only reason I'd actually purchase anyway, lol.

A good cover is nice, but I ultimately go by how much I like the synopsis/concept and then how much I like the writing after sample reading.

i do! i've casually watched lots of ppl over the yrs, but my go-to's are: jess owens, mynameismarines, bookslikewhoa, beautifullybookishbethany, bookishrealm/realmofkidlitcomics, tysbookcorner, withcindy, and @mswocreader.bsky.social

That alone gives them certain aesthetics/moods/textures. And they naturally create certain rhythms on the page when putting them together in sentences. But I guess some ppl just don't get strong perceptions of stimuli, cognitively speaking.

I think the "normal" way to sense a word is sight and sound. Like you can look at a word or listen to a word, but you can't really taste or touch it. It's easy for me to get extra sensory info outta words, too—especially since words have meanings.

And now they won't be promoted even more, cuz we all know the types of books that'll get most affected by this

I like Easter eggs, too (both as a reader and a writer)! I know for sure there's one story I have I wanna include my dog in, lol.

I recommend trying The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw, if you haven't already! It's a litfic short story collection. I really enjoyed it!

Yes, I have the same struggle! Right now, I'm more in the reading zone. I think I'm gonna watch writing sprints to help me get back to writing more!

Yeah, using pen names makes more sense when your stories have wildly different content. If you're still keeping everything pretty adjacent, you should be fine.

I think as long as you have consistent themes or subjects across your work, doing different kinds of genres shouldn't really matter.
comment in response to
post
I think you can call yourself one as long as you're making a piece of written work with the goal of completing it, even if it's just one project. That's the distinction for me: the intention of finishing, not just starting.

I'd say the communal aspect of it. My elementary school friend recommending something she was reading at the time made me really get into it. I wasn't really finding books that were my taste or had ppl to talk about em with until then, so that's how the passion truly took off!

Yeah, thrillers can have horror elements! I think if the primary theme is crime and the criminal justice system, it's a thriller story. And then, the secondary horror element of how fear & dread develops in ppl + affects them would be shown in their reactions to the criminal activity/investigation.

Yay, you're welcome!
comment in response to

I'd say thrillers deal with the darkness of the criminal justice system, while horror simply deals with the darkness of feeling fear & dread (which can be evoked from any type of experience).
comment in response to

I like collections, cuz I like seeing the compare/contrast of the multiple pieces exploring a theme or idea in different ways. And it's also just more bang for your buck!

You can try using the style of underwear it is as the descriptor, like boyshorts/briefs/thongs/bikinis/hipsters.

It's not from the detective's POV, but the killer's. And it's a short story, so the "investigation" part won't really be included. It just focuses on the killer's escalation to committing murder.

The psychology, for sure.

I haven't started writing them yet, but I really like one of my ideas that deals with mental health!

I write mystery/thriller/horror, and I love it because it represents the importance of facing our pain/suffering instead of escaping it.

The length seems fine to me!

I also set the speed in that range! My brain processes faster than the default narration, so it gets too frustrating to read along with it lol.
comment in response to

I'm definitely not writing for profit! I still don't mind making it available for other ppl to read; I just won't be charging for it as the default. The main reason I have a buy option is just so I can have bound copies of my own work, lol.

My writing wasn't great when I started doing it, but it naturally got better after learning more about the craft. And fanfic is also more anonymous, so I didn't have to worry about ppl directly knowing it was me poorly writing something. Just focus on having fun, and the rest will work itself out!

I can at least do 1K words per hr, if I'm in writing shape/not editing while writing/don't have writer's block. But if that's not the case, I usually struggle getting into the hundreds.
comment in response to

Yes! I typically listen to rock/metal music, cuz it's a similar vibe to mystery/thriller/horror, which is what i write.

As soon as possible for me, lol. I don't give myself DNF limits. I'll ditch the book, once I'm not feeling it, no matter how early on it may be in the story.
