Our tendency is to follow norms & traditions slavishly in the expectation that doing so will lead to a good outcome. We believe the process is the goal, whereas it is only the means. We must instead choose the outcome we want and base our actions on that.

One result of this is that Midwestern states where the people were level-headed and conservative (in the old sense) have become rabid extremists (i.e. magas). Even NC, traditionally staid & sober compared to its neighbors in SC, has gone crazy. Just look who they put up for governor.

One thing that strikes me is that what used to be a peculiarly Southern brand of Evangelical Christianity has spread like wild fire in rural areas around the country, especially in the Midwest. One sign of this is that regional accents (Iowa, Nebraska, etc.) are melding into a single rural accent.
