Master of the grove was fantasy but at least to me strongly horror adjacent. I'd reread it if it was still in print and see what adult me thinks.

I never read anything else by him but for some reason this book really stuck with me. Used to scare the living daylights out of me too. Sadly it seems to be out of print these days

Could be a wrong suggestion again but your description rang a bell cos I constantly have that about *this* book. I also read it in Swedish and never remember the English name or writer

Is it Master of the grove by victor kelleher?
Was going to include the blurb but it sucks. It definitely has this boy with an injured leg or something I think there is a tame crow or raven and the ppl after him cover their lower faces to not be recognised. Something about breath/being dead iirc

Was the disguised wizard disabled? Bad keg or clubfoot can't remember which and had to use a stick to walk?

24th of the #MiniMná is Gráinne Mhaol (Ní Mháille). Commanding a fleet of ships and engaging in piracy and raids, she met with Queen Elizabeth in person, and legend has it she sprang up straight after giving birth to turn the tide of a battle. (She's also here www.ciaraioch.com/artprints/p/...)
