Flip phones make their comeback in the EU! Image is courtesy of the Financial Times #phone #keitai

While we haven't found #MegaMan 9's i-mode port, we did find a Hatsune Miku-themed ROM hack of it... Mickman 39. It's a trial version with 1 stage. The boss is Kagamine Len. Touhou characters and even Spiderman make appearances as enemies. It's also surprisingly difficult! Truly a fever dream.

The Docomo SH-06C, released in 2011, has a very special feature: a built-in projector! Seriously, this would be a much better way to show videos to my friends than my regular phone screen. I wonder about battery life though 🤔 #keitai

The N701iECO, released by Docomo in 2006, has an exterior shell built entirely out of biodegradable plastic! Additionally, 1% of all charges to users who owned this phone were used to fund environmental protection activities. I wish I could get one nowadays! #keitai

Hey folks! I've been busy on TikTok after getting a surprisingly warm response on the platform, including one video with 750k+ views! Still, I find myself wanting to share more phone facts than I can fit in a video, so I'll be posting some more here :) www.tiktok.com/@unabandonwa...

This game is more difficult than I had expected.

An anonymous user preserved a COMPLETE copy of Xenosaga: Pied Piper and Lost Chronicle! Lost Chronicle was Namco's original i-mode RPG. Pied Piper was a previously-lost #Xenosaga spinoff, with 3 chapters and an original story. @valakturtle.bsky.social has already working on an English patch!

For anyone who happens to have a TikTok, I've just started making regular content on the platform. It's not the same as the content on here given the nature of the platform, so check it out and follow if you like it!

A large portion of the Japanese feature phone game library consisted of #arcade ports from the 80s. This is an early mobile version of the Konami classic TIME PILOT. youtu.be/YY1C-7XclWU

It took a while, but we've finally discovered how to download the #HatsuneMiku Machi-Chara from the SO-04E (special edition Hatsune Miku phone), and install it on other Android devices! This is a video of Hatsune Miku Mei-Chan in BlueStacks.

Very exciting discoveries!

The Fujitsu F901iC, released in 2004, came with a Tweety Bird video avatar pre-installed. We can't make video calls on a F901iC, but we can run the avatar in an emulator! Enjoy this piece of obscure Japanese #LooneyTunes media. youtu.be/2I4LZGWh5wk

Bazaru de Gozaru No Game Degozaru is a PC Engine CD game developed by Game Freak and published by NEC in 1996. Amazingly, NEC never forgot about this character—about 15 years later, he appeared as a pre-installed digital assistant on NEC mobile phones! youtu.be/7gwExfJ1LRs

Thanks to a chip dump from my friend Cuebus, we can retrieve additional files from early Fujitsu and Mitsubishi cell phones. I've extracted the instruction PDF for #Columns Jewel from a D902i. It was likely preinstalled to highlight the phone's ability to read documents.

I've got more #Lumines ! This version came pre-installed on the SoftBank 913SH. It features some sweet Rasta music, which I was not emotionally prepared for 😂 youtu.be/VkbFtABRaTk

We have found another #Lumines game! This one came pre-installed on the SO906i and it features a J-Pop theme. Three songs are included. youtu.be/a_eSn04vKQ8

The early Japanese mobile scene had a surprising amount of freeware and homebrew games. Check out ApeMan, a Super Mario inspired platformer featuring a giant ape. The best part is the button that lets you pick your nose! youtube.com/shorts/B3fmk...

An anonymous user preserved #Tales of Breaker (trial version) and a partial version of Star Ocean Blue Sphere (i-mode remake)! These are server reliant, so functionality is very limited. You can explore one map in Blue Sphere, and we're working on fixing Tales of Breaker. More to come soon!

Is anyone here a fan of some classic #Taito arcade titles? This is Chase H.Q. 3D, an early mobile title in the Chase H.Q. series. youtu.be/w8lOO0-_0D0

Want to learn Japanese? Try playing some Mojipittan! In this scrabble-like game, the goal is to play hiragana pieces in order to spell out as many words as possible. youtu.be/1jQF34xZVUg

For those who do not like using elderly Windows software SDKs, SoftBank MEXA J2ME is becoming increasingly compatible with KEmulator nnmod and JL-Mod. The main challenge right now is reverse engineering the sound DLL. If you can help with this, please join Keitai Wiki discord and chat with us :)

#SpaceInvaders -LINK- was a mobile version of Space Invaders that included a normal game mode and a VS mode. It came pre-installed on select Softbank phone models manufactured by Panasonic. youtu.be/aPuzSFpf-ds

Select Willcom feature phones, such as the WX01K, offered the ability to install appli through SD card. Apparently they can also sideload Western J2ME appli, but I have yet to try this.

Shared below is footage from the #KamenRider mobile Flash game 仮面ライダー電王 走れ電王クライマックス (Kamen Rider Den-O Run Den-O Climax). Browser Flash games were published on Japanese flip phones because they could run on any device regardless of J2ME protocol (DoJa, BREW, S!Appli) www.youtube.com/shorts/NC8T-...

Remember when all mobile phones came with keychain loops? #nostalgia

We are now emulating yet another type of Japanese mobile appli. This is the V-appli emulator for Vodafone applications. These apps do not work in other emulators, because of that would be too easy. The sound chip is excellent though. Here's some more #PuyoPuyo youtu.be/XVJ1orgn6-0

Going further down the #Digimon mobile rabbit hole, I've learned about the super cool ways you could use your phone to unlock unique Digimon on various devices with passcodes and infrared. It's a bit complicated, so I wrote up a blog post explaining everything below unabandonware.com/digimon-flip...

Did you know that before Pokemon Go, #Digimon released a GPS-based mobile game back in 2010? Digimon Life was a Japanese mobile game where you could catch Digimon based on factors such as location, time, season, and weather. You could also scan in real life toys! keitaiwiki.com/wiki/Digimon...

Any #PostPet fans out there? We've extracted data from the SO702i, a phone that came with loads of pre-installed PostPet content including emojis, email templates, virtual avatars, and games. This is PostPet Reversi. https://youtu.be/WWmsmRYHROo

If anyone has been trying to buy a FOMA debug adapter, I didn't realize they were listed as sold out. My bad! They are back in stock and I'll be adding more. You can buy them from @gametank.zone (it's my boyfriend's store so I'm saving on fees hehe)

Using DraStic for Android, I can run Nintendo DS games on the SH-01J. Is this the next Steam Deck killer?? Only time will tell...

Amazon's changing the way the Kindle works on Tuesday, so if you want to download and de-DRM your books, you have until the 26th to get it done. I wrote a quick how-to, for anyone who is interested: next.content.town/p/kindle-drm...

Here is a look at the Lilo & Stitch stages in Disney #Meteos for mobile phones. In story mode, Stitch is acting a bit strange...and soon you discover why! Full video linked here https://youtu.be/8GzTcg1zipU

Super proud of my pals @naoyashinota.bsky.social , @rockmancosmo.bsky.social , @yuvi.app and everyone else who has been working on recreating Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII. Check out this long form article on Time Extension documenting the process!

The #OnePiece content keeps coming - this is a Chopper Machi-Chara. Machi-chara are Japanese feature phone standby screen characters/mobile assistants who wander around your home screen and react to notifications. Check out all of Chopper's reactions!

In other preservation news, the Casio Loopy now has a dedicated wiki at https://casioloopy.wiki. The wiki aims to gather resources for hardware and homebrew into a single location. If you're interested, make sure to join the Casio Loopy Discord server linked on the front page.

In the 2000s, Japan had a rich e-book library available on PDAs and feature phones which included animations and other features unique to the .zbf format. Many books are gone, and the .zbf format only works in aged proprietary software. Check out the #Naruto 1st chapter sample. youtu.be/w_b7CtlYgSc

Here's a Japanese #mascot you've probably never heard of: this is Erikulu, the mascot for Sony Ericsson phones in the mid 2000s. There's very little information about this character online, but I assume Erikulu has a *sparkly* personality based on appearance ;) https://youtu.be/-exLfDMUgrk

I will no longer be posting on X/Twitter, only BlueSky. I try to keep politics out of hobbies, and X has been useful for outreach to Japan. But I can't contribute to a company run by Musk while he makes himself my unelected president. I hope my posts can reach Japan another way.

It's quite exciting we finally recovered #LocoRoco Mobile, but now we have an English patch! Thanks to GuiMi for making this possible. Looking forward to some more patches in the future to make keitai games a bit more accessible ) https://youtu.be/INkFFQQ5Cw0

A fun #Sanrio related find - some early Japanese feature phones came with a pre-installed TV remote application that took advantage of the phone's IR port. On the SH505i, this particular app had a Hello Kitty theme. I wish I could use this on my TV today! https://youtu.be/d7yuu0RUpjI

Time Extension posts the best retro gaming news? What? No I'm not biased...😜

We've had a few folks join Keitai Wiki asking about Machi-Chara (digital phone assistant) for Android. The Android version functions like the i-mode version, but the file formats are different. This is how Machi-Chara look in BlueStacks: https://youtu.be/hP1Vnu1HqXw
