For the sake of the country we should start planning for the aftermath right now.

One of the agents literally said to the attorney, “I’m just following orders.”

Imagine how little ability to foresee obvious consequences you have if you are the Trump aide who ordered this while Trump was yelling at the TV.

if they had the capacity for rational thought they'd think twice about setting any kind of precedent concerning the unlawful exercise of presidential authority by persons other than the president, but here we are

My amateur theory, based on observing AI startup executives in public appearances and end users across the internet, is that the designers have been incentivized to select for obsequiousness in LLM replies because the end users are desperate to be told they're smart good boys.

Obviously that is not feasible. Ergo, rather than speaking in a way that is aimed at making Trump voters acknowledge their sins, we should speak in a way that presumptively includes them in a coalition to resist his evils.

The goal is not conviction. The goal is for them to start lying and saying they didn’t vote for Trump to their friends, or even better, that they did vote for Trump and he betrayed them and didn’t live up to his promises (fine if they deliberately misremember those promises).

I would simply not go on record in federal court that I think AIDS is good because it might discourage people from having gay sex.

Not that I necessarily believe Biden was the only chance of beating Trump in 2020. But I think most Ds would happily embrace that story and he’d have become a respected/influential party elder. And assuming Ds still lose in 2024 (I think they would have) that would blamed whoever was on the ballot.

It makes me genuinely sad that he torched his legacy because he couldn’t admit that he was old and tired. If he had declined to seek reelection, his legacy would be that he stayed in public service just long enough to save us from Trump and then finally took the rest and peace he deserved.

100% this. the debate could have been salvageable if an energetic, alert biden spent the days following it giving interviews and greeting supporters, and any competent campaign would have had him out doing that if he were capable. But in fact he was not capable, and so he needed to step aside.

This was also the argument for pursuing contracts with the federal government as a private business, fwiw. Lower profit margins but fair competition and steady, predictable revenue. Hard to convince anyone to spend time/resources responding to a federal RFP these days.

Why expend any effort when the entire political media will continue to treat you as the party of fiscal hawks & write yet another round of think pieces about whether the GOP can become the party of the working class?

Law Dork can confirm that this is the message Robert Newlen—who became the Acting Librarian of Congress after Trump purported to fire Carla Hayden—sent to colleagues a little before noon today. One source within LOC adds that staff were told that LOC is waiting on Congress as to next steps.
