I first heard Ursula speak in person when she was GoH at the 1st Wiscon I attended way back in the day. She ended her speech with, "And to those who say, 'I'm not a feminist, but...' I say, "You are, though. You are a feminist butt."

This is the edition that was your friendly local social media manager’s introduction to Ursula’s work. I can’t say I like it, exactly, and yet I feel affectionately about it anyway. (This “I” is Molly, who is often the person doing the posting here. Theo signs his own posts!)

Motto: In Hoc Signo Dormouse (In This Sign a Dormouse? My Latin is weak). The blazon: Dormouse Rampant, Super Cigarette Butt Sinister, Fumans: On A Field of Cassata. Found in an otherwise innocent sketchbook, no explanation or context, assuredly not of Ursula's family.

Pard is, like Don Draper, handsome, dapper and elusive, harboring secrets and perhaps past trauma, capable of great sweetness but at rare moments an unapologetic cad.

That year was, of course, a high water mark for Mad Men on AMC, which may explain the name; and though he is a much better Pard than a Draper, the name would not have been an inappropriate choice.

A biographical surprise: Pard's adoption papers turned up recently, and reveal that in November 2011 (when he was approximately one year old and weighing in at just over seven pounds, oh à la recherche du temps perdu), his adoption name was Draper.

Some of her drawings on a particular theme will be available in book form later this year! More details to come...

(Technically this is the 1980 paperback edition, but the cover is the same as the original 1979 hardcover.)
