I use Excel and a bunch of post-it notes.

Oh, they each had to pay a nominal $1, $10k for the department. Worse, the guy did it pro se, so they don’t even pay his costs.

I was in Vegas federal court a month ago consulting on a civil case. The case beforehand was a jury trial in which three officers and the department were found guilty for violating someone’s civil rights (retaliating against protected speech). They clearly learn nothing.

If you are in the National Guard or Active Duty military and you are being ordered to violate the constitutional rights of US citizens call the GI Rights Hotline, 877-447-4487 Please share 🙏🏼

I gave him the data and then was ghosted: no thank you or acknowledgment; no further contact. Anyway, shitty people do shitty things. Did I expect him to be whitewashing someone spreading CSAM? Not really, but here we are! 2/2

The Bukowski quote comes to mind: “The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.”

“What is it that put America in the forefront of the nuclear nations? And what is it that will make it possible to spend $20B of your money to put some clown on the moon? Well, it was good old American know how, that's what, as provided by good old Americans like…uhh, let’s go with John Smith?”

Pretty sure it’s designed to do just that!

It’s also not basic research that’s happening privately, but instead development of basic research that was already publicly financed. There is simply no way to fill that gap without massive public investment.

There’s a reason why for several centuries, most science was conducted by (or with the support of) the independently wealthy.

Sure, that’s why I became a scientist! But I’m also a pragmatist: the research only happens if a congressional majority appropriates the money for it, and that often relies on convincing the incurious it’ll provide economic benefits to their constituents at some point in the future.

Was it a mistake for the US to participate in the space race? At the end of the day, the whole R&D apparatus is designed to yield economic benefits, and that all starts with basic research funding... …and at the same time, yes, that all would be pretty dumb if it were just about chatbots.

That’s fair. I originally saw your response to Costa, which I think was a bit misguided, so I was also somewhat responding to that as well: there’s a ton of non-chatbot uses that NSF absolutely should be funding (e.g., computer vision, robotics, natural language processing, mitigating bias, etc.).

I think the issue is that you’re conflating generative AI with the entire subfield: there’s way more to AI than just chatbots and slop generators (and I say this as a skeptic of most generative AI).

I’m in Madrid for two weeks, with a brief thesis defense in Hamburg in between, then off to Cambridge for a week!

Given the time in the US, I assume you’re also in Europe right now?

Well, if you call, I can see how they can select the wrong name. But that said, it’s detectable and reversible. Honestly, even after the 24 grace period, they’ll likely change the name on the reservation once the issue is pointed out to them. Though maybe that’s only on the diamond line :)

However, they also send you an email confirmation within minutes, when booking by phone, and since all flights are changeable/cancelable within 24 hours of booking, this should have been easy to spot and fix?

Delta allows you to save information on frequent traveling companions to your profile, so that you don’t need to enter their info anew each time. So I suspect over the phone, someone simply picked the wrong name from the drop-down menu.

Amazing that he thinks 21 trillion people illegally entered the US…

Markets run on vibes. Always has been.

I thought about that, but worried it’ll take too much of my time to setup and configure a bot.
