I know Alec knows this but right-wing paramilitaries aren't anywhere near as powerful as "legitimate" state formations that often behave in functionally similar ways. And that's important to keep track of. The masked thugs tackling people outside of courtrooms aren't Proud Boys. They're cops. End.

I'll share more soon about what comes next... and theres much to be said about trying to cover race, identity, and systems of power at a time when reporting those issues has never been more important or more difficult, not just because of forces outside of journalism, but because of forces within.

Related: I do think some liberal reporters assuage their guilt over growing up in blue bubbles by over-performing fairness and empathy toward MAGA cultists. I feel no such need.

But a big protest like this is primarily a show of strength and opposition. It exists to be a symbol. That's often more than enough. As I said earlier, the mere image of the contrast between Trump's limp parade and these No Kings protests is propaganda you couldn't buy for a million bucks.
