This week, I spoke with one of the Duolingo contractors impacted by its 'new' AI strategy, and they clarified that 1) it's not new. Duolingo has *already* fired an estimated 100 writers and translators. 2) they worked for months training an AI system that still makes egregious mistakes.

Ooh it's scrambled for me too. Must be a fault with my phone. Though to quote EL Putnam, "glitches and other...manifestations of breakdown...are indicators of a desire to communicate, part of the broader systems that make such communications possible." So maybe it's my phone's way of joining in :)

Klaus Theweleit's two-volume work Male Fantasies for sure. Also Goebbels' essay Propaganda. And this episode of the ACFM podcast published by @novaramedia.com (which also includes a reading/viewing/listening list) novaramedia.com/2024/04/21/a...

I offered to attend any branch meetings of the attendees' unions. I think all media scholars and tech critics should do the same where they live as a matter of public scholarship and duty. I'm all for the neo-Luddite turn, critical AI etc but the Luddites were first and foremost a labour movement!

Best comment was from one comrade who said she'd come to the meeting thinking she didn't really know much about AI. After our conversation she found that she'd known more than she'd realised and felt better equipped to take up the conversation with other members. This is why we need to demystify AI!

To me it's implying a distinction between the broad political economy of society and the more contingent details of that society. Eg how precisely decisions should be made. It makes no more sense to write social policy for future generations than it makes sense to try to pre-determine their recipes

I think it's literally just "we can't [or it would be pointless to] tell people in the future how to organise/conduct their affairs"
