I would say traditional doom metal is the truest form of heavy metal. But if you include other doom metal subgenres into it, I agree that it becomes less true.

If you (like I do) regard Black Sabbath's debut as the first metal album, I would argue 1 and 2 have to be switched.

In my understanding it's a symptom as it's simply capitalism under an authoritarian state. I would argue that the distinction does not really matter though as capitalism itself does not change.
The rules on how to amass wealth under it just change in comparison to capitalism in liberal democracies.

Surprising (or not) amount of doom metal on here. Some basic picks, some maybe not so obvious ones, depending on who you ask.

They are one of my all time favorite bands and one of the few bands I genuinely love the whole discography of.
I rep them from time to time, but in general they seem to be rather underappreciated here. They have their fans though.

I hate that I have an idea about who that's referring to

Same for me. I think the aesthetic, the world and the story make it a very special game. I finished it first a year ago and still enjoyed my time with it tremendously. Even without having any nostalgia for it.

I love them to bits, I consider myself lucky I could see them live a couple of times. They broke up way too early

Probably early In Flames could be fun live with a certain amount of insobriety.

Teufelsgeist, one of their more synth-laden/ambient releases.

Yes, I always imagined that generic black metal would be one of the easier genres to generate.
I already regret that I engaged earnestly with this at all.

Exactly my thought process. I hate that this is even something in the realm of possibility these days.

Now that's a name I didn't hear in a while. On top of my head they were a bit more interesting, if I don't mix them up, although I'm not at all familiar with their recent output.
I would probably compare it more with Burzum/Mütiilation with some acoustic passages and piano interludes thrown in.

This sounded a bit harsher than I intended it, but I fully respect the vision. It's artistically coherent, the execution is on point and I'm sure there are people out there who will love it for exactly what it is.

haha, yeah I was expecting that. The cover at least made me think, so the least I can do, is to check this out. Knowing my preferences I'm fairly sure it's not really for me though.

I completely agree. I would also argue that romanticism always played a role in black metal's themes and aesthetic, so this direction does not feel out of place at all for me.
I might have to listen to the album now.

Definitely, that was also my first thought. It at least has a long history.
