I’ve had to a ghetto wire transfer here in Canada a few times (withdraw cash one account, immediately deposit it in same ATM different account) and there’s nothing like that for making you kind of have a moment of existential vertigo about how all of society is basically just made up

A lot of people have been making the point that the GOP is governing like they’ll never face voters in elections again. I don’t think this is right. If they weren’t worried about elections, they wouldn’t be spending effort on the SAVE Act. I think what we’re seeing is a total party breakdown 1/x

Having a bit of a hard time with the concept that if a guy in a police uniform who has a police vehicle shows up I should lock the doors and call 911, but if a guy in a ski mask with an hGH gut appears to be kidnapping my neighbor, I shouldn’t ask who he is if I don’t want federal charges.

If random men in masks claiming to be ICE agents try to grab me, and they’re *not* really ICE, I have the legal right to defend myself against them, yes? And if they are ICE, I don’t? So how am I supposed to tell the difference? I’m supposed to give my masked kidnappers the benefit of the doubt??

Yes if only Iran had signed some international deal to halt their nuclear weapons development in exchange for economic relief

I don't know why this paper is open in my tabs, or who sent it to me, but it's important! It's about the Democrats' faith that good policy will yield political support, which appears, with some examination, to be wrong.

We’re announcing new legislation — the No Secret Police Act (SB 627) — to ban local/state/federal law enforcement, w/ some exceptions, from covering their faces when interacting w/ the public & require them to wear identifying info. The secret police behavior we’re seeing destroys trust & must end🧵

Where in god’s name are we as a society when “being young and ambitious on policy” is an unforgivable sin, while “being corrupt and resigning in disgrace after then sexual predation of dozens of women” is not?

Fascinating point. Now to look up why Russia was booted from the G8…

I regret to report we continue to slip into the Infinite Jest universe.

So the guy who can singlehandedly set US tariffs on smartphones is launching his own US smartphone company do I have that right

This is one of the most unintentional @nytpitchbot.bsky.social passages ever.

Unironically they should buy up the domains for about 60 defunct local newspapers in swing states. Hire two reporters to write almost exclusively about highschool sports and new restaurants opening with every 10th article about how the local GOP is screwing over people.

Wow, NYTimes be like, “Andrew Cuomo is our problematic fave." The editorial board willfully misunderstands something I figured out in early adulthood: that sexual harassment tells you everything about someone’s relationship with power, and on its own, ought to be enough to disqualify from office.

This is serious, rigorous analysis and it should change the way the media has been covering these protests. These were, in the aggregate, *massive.*

There’s a real argument to be made that when this is over, we need to move to a Parliamentary system with a Prime Minister instead of a President.

This is not a criticism of Chenoweth’s research, but Goodhart’s law is starting to kick in with respect to this benchmark. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodhar...

Hi everyone I was denied entry, detained, and deported from the USA over the last 48 hours because of my reporting on the Columbia student protests I arrived back in Melbourne hours ago and had my phone handed back to me upon landing

Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop! Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels

I think a good rule of thumb is if your preferred source of news referred to yesterday's protest as "tens of thousands" and not "millions", you need to find a different news source.

This was the retreat from Moscow of military parades.

In its defense this tank was built 80 years ago to eradicate fascism and is cranky as fuck to wake up after all this time and find that it’s next job is to help Donald Trump feel like a big boy dictator on his birthday.

I love that a politician can say something like “I believe mice naturally spawn out of grain” and the news will now just treat that as a legitimate line of thought

THIS is my kind of Army parade.

While I don’t think “oligarch” is as alienating a term as some claimed, this is a very solid edit.

if the literal cops are out here saying "call us before you believe any cop saying theyre a cop is actually a cop" states need to pass laws about LEOs IDing like yesterday or they will face undermined cooperation and faith in the entire law enforcement mechanism at a level that beggars belief
