We've been trying to change the Dems message on this for years, believe me we were nowhere near in charge of the message in '24 and we are trying to fix it. Completely agree it was a travesty

We totally agree, but hope this is one step towards pressuring them to quit doing that. And we also agree they for damn sure shouldn't need a poll, but sadly this is how it works. (and it is true that they should generally understand and listen to voters)

Great job on this story - lots more information on the poll, including an interview with the head of the firm that ran it in this thread:

and that's it not because of immigrants. It's that rich cowards like Trump and Elon are using fear to divide us so the system keeps all the money and power going to them.
Please dive into the deck and pod, and this is a good one to send around to the group chats. Thank you!

Our suspicions - which we will confirm with future research - is that we need a two pronged attack. We can talk about how to improve our immigration system, but voters need to understand why life feels challenging for so many...

Republicans are at -11 net approval on immigration, but Democrats are at a whopping -58. Elected leaders have GOT to try something different, or they will continue to crash onto the rocks of this contentious issue. As Molly put it, "when you say nothing, you confirm their version of events."

We found four messages that resonated particularly well, including (perhaps surprisingly) one focused on due process. It's been difficult to get due process focused messages to land; news of government kidnappings and abductions may have increased the resonance surfaces for this approach.

Many of the specific Stephen Miller driven actions are WILDLY unpopular. Abducting US citizens to foreign prisons, revoking green cards, family separation, and immigration raids at schools were detested with particular intensity.

We found stark, overwhelming disapproval of both his policies and the execution among Black voters, and big gaps starting to open up on disapproval of the enforcement with indies and Latino under 50s. (and this was before the latest series of outrageous crackdowns)

As of mid May, Trump job approval on immigration was still in positive territory. But just barely: +1, and even then the execution of the agenda was at -5. However, just over the course of the poll and the questions we asked, approval of his handling of immigration dropped by TEN POINTS, to -9.

The poll was run from 6-11 May 2025, N=1000 of likely 2026 voters in key congressional districts with an oversample of N=300 AAPI, Black, and Latino voters (N=100 each). MoE is 3.1% on the toplines, more in subgroups.

Yep, people are going to be mad. But it's not just that they signed it and ran on it. It's how they ran on it. This was one of the ads with the most $ behind it at the Senate level. Catastrophically terrible strategy and we need accountability.

At one point Chuck mentions a chart we put out about what the most spending on issues in this election was. That's from our TV Congress reporting. Here's the chart, but if you go to the site you can click on each issue and actually watch the ads.

The Biden skippers and voters like them aren’t gone.
We need to grow communication channels that reach them, but we also need to put a stronger story into the channels we DO have.
Telling a stronger story costs the same as telling a weak one. We can take these hills.
But we have a lot of work to do.

Some strategist are suggesting we go small and train our focus on the higher engagement voters we’re already reaching.
We disagree. Ordinary Republican ideas are bad for everyone, Trump/MAGA ideas are even worse.
And the fate of the American experiment hangs in the balance,

Taken together, we believe the evidence suggests this isn't the grand realignment right wing strategists are so thirsty for. It could be the beginning of it. But Trump’s cruelty, bald faced extremism and incompetence have given us a big opening. We still have a way out.
