Full on circus now. I need some popcorn.

Ah, Americans. We’re a classy bunch aren’t we.

Just published, expansion in situ genome sequencing, where you can sequence DNA while still inside the cell, mapping its organization relative to proteins and other markers, with the help of expansion microscopy! Led by @jbuenrostro.bksy.social. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Just doomscrolled for a few minutes while waiting for my plane. Ugh. Thank you Peter Ralph and Mike Whitlock for organizing a great EvoWIBO and providing an intellectual safe harbor of science for 36 hours. Athanks to all the talk and poster presenters. You all are a true inspiration!

Happening now at Evo-WIBO: @harmitmalik.bsky.social delivering a great talk on red queen dynamics in host-virus molecular evolution. A great example of how fundamental basic science leads to eventual application for human benefit. Without the engine of the former the benefits of the latter stall. 🧪🖥️

Can we get more of this? “The Japanese American National Museum will ‘scrub nothing,’ Fujioka said, and instead will highlight the importance of DEI. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka said.

Oh wow: Portland Oregon is NOT KIDDING #handsoff

Excited for all the new American banana and coffee factories.

One simple thing we as a science community can do for our trainees and early career scientists is not punish them for science career interruptions in this turbulent time 🧪🧬💻

I’m really getting down about the ongoing trade deficits I have with our local coffee shops. I give them money and all they give me are cappuccinos and lattes. THEY ARE RIPPING ME OFF. I’m going to put a 50% tariff on myself for every coffee. The mid coffee making will come roaring back to my house.

Just in NIH grants, It looks like beautiful Iowa City, home of the U of Iowa, will lose $71m in funding. That's almost $1k per resident. And that's before all the other cuts to SSA, FDA, etc. Anyone in Iowa City that can offer more insight? scienceimpacts.org H/T to Prathima !

No one who puts the security of our counter so recklessly at risk should be in a position of authority. The worst part is the carelessness. With this level of sloppiness for this 1 thing we find out about there must be 100 other actions that are putting our country at risk.

Right in front of the house we’re renting in Manzanita. Phew, safe by a few inches.

The writing’s been on the wall for a while, and in case anyone was unaware: YOUR GENOMIC DATA IS THE MOST VALUABLE ASSET THEY HAVE LEFT. Delete your data. Make sure you opt-out of any opt-outable options. Tell your friends and family - you know that technophobe cousin missed the memo. 🧪

We bought our electric car 4 years ago and it just passed 30k miles. Something I didn’t fully appreciate was how little maintenance it would need. We took it in to the Volvo for its checkup and still nothing wrong. We haven’t had to do a single bit of maintenance the whole time we’ve own it. Zero.

How does clean air affect national parks? The tower atop Kuwohi affords long-reaching views across Appalachian mountain tops. Interpretive signs show the smog-filled obscured view before EPA protections for clean air. Great Smoky Mountains National Park #nationalparks #cleanair #EPA #parkchat

Alluding to the deep well of sympathy and friendship toward the United States that endures in France, he added: “We all in Europe love this nation to which we owe so much. It will rise again. You will rise again. We are counting on you.”

Vaccines save lives. “It’s often said that the first responsibility of any government is the safety & protection of its people. That alone should be reason enough for policymakers to encourage people to get themselves & their children vaccinated” 🧪 #MedSky @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The Navajo Code Talkers were true American heroes whose unbreakable code helped the United States and Allies win WWII and saved countless lives. The Trump administration erased their story from all military websites. How is that making America great? 🤔

Confirmation!! And including open sessions!

Mark this weekend. We have reached the point of constitutional crisis. The Article 1 branch is silent, and the executive now ignores the judiciary. It is up to us - the legitimate authority in our country - to guarantee that government of the people, by the people, for the people does not perish.

Thomas Friedman hit it right on. Trump did not look for competence, just ‘the most sycophantic and right-wing woke’ set of flunkies. We are living through the consequences of their deep incompetence. In their positions only because of their ideology, gender and racial identities. Right-wing woke.

I am not going to call this a Bluetorial, because I do not want to sully that term (which, at least I, find joyful). Let’s call it a Orwellial.
