Might have something to do with how McDonnell Douglas as a firm were more of a defense contractor, like Lockheed. But McDonnell always had quality issues, which is why they stopped winning government contracts. It's actually a really interesting story. And a triumph of the free market /s

Boeing was a reputable company before they were merged with mcdonnell douglas. It essentially cost Boeing their (good) leadership. They've been coasting on a reputation ever since then. And well, the results of that are clear.
