We thank Reviewer 2 for their helpful feedback which has greatly improved the paper

I have been logged out of my toothbrush.

"Maybe it's because of the little cocktail I made myself this morning. Usually, to get myself going, I drink some coffee or a glass of white wine; today I mixed the two." "Coffee and wine together?" "It wasn't completely terrible. It was a real pick-me-up." (Beauvoir - The Inseparables)

RIP Alasdair MacIntyre, a towering figure the likes of which this world rarely produces. Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that his influence extended far beyond his scholarship:

The Iffley foxes are back

Visited a different neighbourhood to view a house yesterday evening and the local cat situation there is very strong indeed.

This photo from 2021 popped up on my phone. This was peak pandemic & I’d just leave the door of my flat open & my neighbour’s cat would come in to visit. If I remember correctly, I didn’t know he was in the flat at all—he was a master of stealth—and I turned round from my desk to see this tableau.

This is a characteristically great short piece by @noreenmasud.bsky.social. I’ve been rereading Joan Didion’s Slouching towards Bethlehem recently, and this passage at the end of Noreen’s article seems to describe what’s going on in that essay well.

Author of lauded memoir A FLAT PLACE, @noreenmasud.bsky.social is this year's Life Writing judge for the 2025 Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize. In this new piece for the Wasafiri website, Noreen reflects on the value of the anecdote when writing about one's life: buff.ly/vKiQs95

Today, I made the important discovery—as you might guess, not entirely intentionally—that spraying limescale remover on clothing that has a stain on it is just as effective as spraying stain remover. Updating my epistemology of inquiry accordingly.

And people say there’s no progress in philosophy

Learning that, when Joan Didion was stuck on a writing project, she’d put the manuscript in a bag in the freezer until she was ready to go back to it, and wondering whether that would work with this paper I’m working on.

'Rethinking the role of language in arguments for extended cognition' has been accepted in Synthese

This might be recency bias, but I think this is the best paper I've written. It showcases how causal models can unite engineering, dynamic systems theory and biology, while pointing to the work to be done in learning and applying causal concepts. philsci-archive.pitt.edu/25288/

@rkubala.bsky.social, @adamlovett.bsky.social, and I have a new paper forthcoming in the Journal of Philosophy. It’s called ā€œOn the value of irreplaceable objectsā€ – Here’s a thread! philpapers.org/rec/KUBOTV 1/n

I’m hoping the conference sightseeing tour visits here so that a group of analytic philosophers can wander around muttering ā€˜well, that’s not actually a *paradox*’

Further encounters with the author of the mysterious sounds

One of the strangest ironies of the last ten years has been watching Britain immersing itself as deeply as ever in memories of WW2 while proudly turning its back on the project that emerged from it.

I came home last night and failed to close my front door properly. From the kitchen, I heard strange scratching and scraping sounds in the hallway. My heart thumping, I went through to investigate. I found this.

Awaiting a flight to northern Scotland once, a pre-board announced asked ā€œAlistair Maclean please come to the desk.ā€ Three men got up. ā€œOh good. I wanted to check there really were three of you.ā€
